Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

Good morning.  I'm not sure what you mean by...

"NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work."

They are both saved to my "Downloads" folder and both as a Desktop shortcut. ??

Thanks. Looks good.

Please click on START and type in CMD.EXE and when it shows on the menu right click over it and select "Run as administrator" then type in the following.

CHKDSK   C:  /R

Then it will say it cannot lock the drive. Press the Y key and then the Enter key to have it run on restart. Then go ahead and restart the computer to let it run. It can take a while to run but let it run.

Next,

Your computer appears to possibly be having a Windows Update issue. Please run the fix from this site and see if that can correct it for you. Let me know the results on your next reply please.

Hi and thanks,

1) I ran CHKDSK to completion.

2) I ran the Microsoft fix and got the following results:

  • Windows Update Error 0x80070057 (2016-05-21-T-10_43_29P)  ...Not Fixed
  • Service registration is missing or corrupt  ...Fixed
  • Problems installing recent updates    ....Fixed

I tried to install the 18 pending Windows updates again, but they all failed.

Will be back tomorrow -- past my bed time.  :-)

Please try the following other tool.

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

If that does not work then give this tool a try.

Automatically reset Windows Update components
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

If neither of those fix the issue then please try the following.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool for your version of Windows here: System Update Readiness Tool

NOTE:: If you aren't sure if your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, check here: How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

This tool will take some time to complete - when it has finished, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

Hi,

The first two tools produced the same result -- same Error Code 0x80070057...Not Fixed.

The SURT has been "Searching for updates on this computer" for about three hours now.  I know you said it takes a while, but it doesn't seem right.  Should I re-run?  Thanks.

Well, after 3+ hours "Searching for updates", I decided to go ahead and re-boot my computer.  When I opened SURT, this time I got a completely different result.  It began by saying "Initializing installation", then asked me if I wanted to install "Hotfix for Windows".  I assumed this was part of the SURT procedure, so said "Yes".  It proceeded to install Hotfix (update 1 of 1).  It installed rather quickly, then seems to have stalled at about 85% (my estimate).  It's been there for about the past hour......still installing Hotfix.  Please let me know what to do.  Thanks.

I rebooted.  After giving permission to install Hotfix, I got a dialog box that says "The Updates are Being Installed".  Below that, it says "Installation Status:  Initializing installation..."  Below that is the horizontal install bar that shows progress of the installation by filling up with green as it progresses.  Last time, as I said, the green bar went to about 85%, then stalled.  This time, the green didn't even begin.  It now seems to be stalled at "Initializing installation" for the past 40 minutes or so.

The last fixit tool ran overnight and has apparently failed.  It said "Detecting problems...checking for updates on-line."  I rebooted this morning and it has been running again with no progress and the same message.  Method 2 is a "System Restore."  I honestly don't feel comfortable doing this.  I don't want to mess up any info on my computer.

I've been meaning to ask you...have all the tools I have run this past week "cleaned out" my computer?  That is, is there currently no malware on my computer?  Also, the four threats that were identified a few days ago -- were those active threats that affected the functioning of my computer or were they just "potential" threats?

I can't help having my suspicions.  I began having problems when Microscoft started to "sneak in" Win 10 updates.  Then I learned about GWX Control Panel, which I installed about a month ago.  It picked up all the Win 10 updates, which I then deleted.  It has also alerted me to new updates that Microsoft was trying to sneak in.

Anyhow, I'm beginning to think I am running out of options here.  Do you think it's time for a new computer?

No problem. You're quite welcome. Wish I was able to help you with it better but all the "fixes" don't seem to fix it for you so maybe Microsoft will be able help out.

I'll go ahead then and close this topic now but if you do need further assistance please let us know.

Take care

Ron
