Hi, I'm new to this forum (and program) and I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question.

My mother recently got a new laptop (HP Pavilion dv6-1030us) a couple of weeks ago and I was asked to install some AV programs. Since I've heard a lot of good things about this program from my friends and personal experience (on my desktop), I put it on her computer. I believe the version installed was 1.36 or 1.37 (laptop is not in my possession atm). I'll admit I'm still learning to this whole process.

After the program was installed, I allowed an update and a full scan. There was no AV and I think my mom's co-worker took out the Norton (60 day) trial on accident instead of installing their own AV. Anyways, after the scan, I noticed the program had some detections and I thought they were real threats so they deleted them. I installed McAffee and the computer picked up 60+ viruses.

Now here's my problem. When I log onto her computer using her account (default admin). I can't install any programs. Any help would be much appreciated.

The laptop is updated with the latest drivers from both MS and HP.

  • Root Admin

The system could be very infected and blocking any attempt to install other software.

Please follow the directions below when you do have possession of the laptop.

Please take a look at the following posts and see if they help you to resolve this or not.

Procedures to help resolve issues preventing MBAM from running

  1. MBAM won't run(Fix), SystemSecurity
  2. MB won't run(Fix) - Total-Security (FakeAlert)
  3. MBAM wont run (Fix) - av360 (Fakealert)
  4. MBAM wont install or will not run. - CLB Rootkit driver=TDSS/Seneka/GAOPDX/UAC

Scan and post logs - read note at bottom in green

Thanks for the reply Advanced. I will check out those links you've provided me.

On another note, I'm sorry I think I left more details out on my original post. From what my mother told me and what I saw before I gave it to her. The computer runs fine. She can start programs, but when she tries to install a program from a cd or from the internet. She gets "needs admin" access eventhough she has admin rights.

I just wanted to state that in case it's something small or to make sure everything is indeed an issue where it may go further. Also, sorry again for not saying this in the original post.

Make sure that User Account Control is still turned on, because in Vista no user has true admin rights and processes like installs etc that require them need to be elevated. UAC detects this and will prompt the user to allow or deny the program the privelages it needs to run as admin. With UAC turned off there would be no prompt for elevated rights, and thus no elevation and therefore it would fail to install. Some people get annoyed by UAC, but it's nice to have it there when something malicious is trying to infect your PC but doesn't have the privelages to do so :P .

Just got a chance to look at the computer. I found out it was the AV that was giving the little problem. It was a security protocol that I had to disable. Re-installed the AV and now the computer works fine. Thanks for the responses all.

Are any viruses still being detected?

EDIT: didn't see an Edit button for my post.

@Exile - Yeah I made sure of that too before I found out about the problem being my AV.
