Last year I encountered many HELP_DECRYPT files left in lots of folders I'd downloaded anime into. I did many registry edits and clean wipes, nothing comes up on scan.

I recently rediscovered some in AppData, just the file it leaves behind with the details, called HELP_DECRYPT. I've done scans with Malwarebytes and it doesn't detect anything at all. I can't afford Spyhunter and the free version is cheeky and you can't finish a scan or remove anything unless you have a product key, am I safe now or is it not reliable? I've heard Malwarebytes can detect anything left from this malware, but I'm no expert so I have no idea.

I just have the files left from it, I didn't lose anything super important, do I just manually delete all the HELP_DECRYPT png files etc and leave it or is there anything else I need to do? Please help!

Last year I did many cleans and scans and encountered no other issues, all of the leftover HELP_DECRYPT files are from last June, but I'm paranoid, and I also want to know if it's okay to just individually go through each folder on Appdata and delete the PNGs and internet shortcuts it leaves behind, is there a way to do it in one go, is it a sign I'm still infected?

Sorry this is all over the place.

Also, my laptop has been super slow lately so I get worried. It turns itself on from sleep by itself sometimes at 2 or 3am as well, I'm assuming that has nothing to do with this though.

Hello Kevin! Thank you very much for your time! I have these logs for you

I originally pasted, then realised you could attach the files! I hope these are okay! I do already have adwcleaner and did one in the last couple of weeks, however using it right now prompts me to update it, and Windows does not seem to like this update, marking the download as unsafe.

I wonder how buggered I am from these logs x__x;;; I am so nervous! I don't think I have anything illegal; I have the free download Adobe released of CS2 and other software as I was a uni student with access to Adobe!

PS. There is lots of leftover HELP_DECRYPT png and shortcut files in lots of folders, I'm nervous! Can I delete them?

Don`t be nervous your logs are fine, bit of a tidy up needed... Also ignore the warning for AdwCleaner, let it update and run a fresh scan..

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into.
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Post the logs from FRST and AdwCleaner, also give an update on any remaining issues or concerns...

Thank you,

I shall get to that now and let you know the results!

Yes please some other things- one of the services in bg is SMMP TRAP, is this normal? Do I have spyware or anything? And once I've cleaned up, does this mean that my pastes to you reveal that the HELP_DECRYPT ransomware isn't actively on my computer and thus are the files left behind just harmless remnants? (the png files called HELP_DECRYPT)

thank you!

Your system is clean except for the inert remnants that will be removed with FRST, What do you mean by the following quote?

SMMP TRAP is a service on my Task Manager list and I wondered if that was anything suspicious

I had to work last night so I need to redo everything today, sorry for the delay!

Okay, back! My bad, it is indeed SNMP TRAP not the one I put! Is it safe?

I have for you the attached logs for Adwcleaner and Foobar (which came up and got rid of the HELP_DECRYPT remnants so thank you so much!)

I never used PG in the end (there's a Chrome extension that lets this game play for you even outside of JP without proxies needed) but I followed a tutorial online recently about how to play Kancolle if you're not in Japan, promise I've been good!

I tried to compress a zip for that folder, but it would not let me as it said the folder did not contain anything to compress. The location is indeed in C:\ , under

C:\b4b7a8857f39c16a7e13376c57

It is odd that it won't compress, as it contains an application called MPSigStub.exe? I have no idea what it is or if it's safe but it has been there since last July apparently!

Sorry to be super persistent, some other random concerns

- Still feeling unsure if there's any spyware, I'll be watching a stream of a Youtube video and without going on the touchpad to move the mouse, it acts like it has and brings up the video control part at the bottom with the minutes elapsed and whatnot by itself

- How to check if anything else is a possible threat to my pc but isn't coming up in McAfee (once, McAfee and Mwb were removed all by themselves and it really scared me! I've scanned and reinstalled since with no problems, though)

- A question about the hackers behind the HELP_DECRYPT malware: Do they ever actually bother looking at or distributing the files they Cryptolock? I'm sure some of my old chatlogs were in folders which were infected. They probably snicker at some of the things my friends have said in them.

Thank you very much!

Thank you for your patience, also.

MpSigStub.exe is a MS installer application used in conjunction with Windows Automatic Updates. It extracts update files to a temporary directory, In your case "C:\b4b7a8857f39c16a7e13376c57" I would just leave it alone...

SNMP Traps   Is also safe, I`m not going to explain this one... Have a read here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/172879

A question about the hackers behind the HELP_DECRYPT malware: Do they ever actually bother looking at or distributing the files they Cryptolock?

The the answer to that is NO, they have no interest whatsoever. They are quite happy to mess up your system and look for a Ransom, even if you pay the ransom there is no guarantee of a fix...

I do not see any malware or infection in your logs, i`d say you are good to go. Just clean up first...

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

If your security program alerts to Delfix either, accept the alert or turn your security off.

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

  •
  • Remove disinfection tools

  • Purge System Restore <--- this will remove all previous and possibly exploited restore points, a new point relative to system status at present will be created.

  • Reset system settings

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…

thank you so much! I'm so sorry, I forgot one final question:

I'll be watching videos or have Chrome or other windows open so the window is current/highlighter

it clicks off by itself as if someone else has, is it a glitch? you know when you click another window and the current one's header dims?
