RogueKiller reports possible Malware IAT Hooks

Recommended Posts

I have MBAM premium after being impressed with it's removal of malware on a friends PC.

I regularly run a MBAM quick scan every day and a threat scan once a week.

I also run a Comodo quick scan every day and once a week a full scan.

I also have Spyshelter Premium installed.

MBAM reports that my system is clean, I have enabled scan for rootkits, etc.

Today Comodo Internet Security Premium kept asking for permission for a remote computer to access svchost.exe. 196.168.1.5

I recognise this address is part of my home network.

I have not installed any new devices.

So I did a google search and decided to run a scan with RogueKiller which i discovered here in  this Forum

below is a copy of the RogueKiller report.

Please advise.

Hello.

I first became aware of something unusual when Comodo CIS firewall wanted permission for a remote computer on my home network 198.168.1.5 to connect to my PC.  I chose the block only option and did a Google search and found RougeKiller was recommended, so I did a scan only.

The report came back with multiple possible infections.

My actions after the report was to run the following programs.

1st MBAM Premium. Threat Scan, didn't find anything (Rootkit scan enabled)

2nd Comodo CIS Full Scan, didn't find anything.

3rd SuperAntiSpyware didn't find anything.

Every day I run scheduled scans with MBAM Hyperscan followed by CIS Quick Scan and once a week I run MBAM Threat Scan & CIS Full Scan.

Thank you.

I thought it strange, but had to get a second opinion from someone more knowledgeable. However a new development!

Late last night MBAM reported that it could not perform a Rootkit scan and mentioned that rootkits could cause this.

At the time I was in one of my standard user accounts, doing a distance learning course when I got the message popup.

I don't understand it.

Could it be an error with MBAM.

Why would RogueKiller report possible infections one day but not MBAM & CIS only to have MBAM two days latter report unable to do a Rootkit scan?

I'm cautious, I use chrome with WOT: Web of Trust, Website Reputation Ratings extension and go through Norton ConnectSafe DNS

I surf the internet or www in a standard user account.

I only ever use admin for updates & new installation of software & Peripherals &  hardware.

Confused.

RogueKiller and similar tools with rootkit scan capabilities are a bit "raw" and hard to interpret so don't pay too much attention what it says. Let's run one mbam scan:

51a46ae42d560-malwarebytes_anti_malware. Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please re-run 51a46ae42d560-malwarebytes_anti_malware. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

  • First of all, select update.
  • Once updated, click the Settings tab, in the left panel choose Detection & Protection and tick Scan for rootkits.
  • In the same tab, under PUP and PUM detections make sure it is set to Treat detections as malware
  • Click the Scan tab, choose Threat Scan is checked and click Start Scan.
  • If threats are detected, click the Apply Actions button. You will now be prompted to reboot. Click Yes.
  • Upon completion of the scan (or after the reboot), click the History tab.
  • Click Application Logs and double-click the newest Scan Log.
  • At the bottom click Export and choose Text file.

Save the file to your desktop and upload your next reply.

Hello TwinHeadedEagle

As requested here is the MBAM log for the most recent scan using Threatscan with RootKit scan turned on.

MBAM-02-02-2016.txt  :)

So I guess last night's MBAM must have had some kind of glitch to have thrown up that error message about not being able to perform a rootkit scan.  :(

I always have had rootkit scan enabled since I installed MBAM Premium last year.

I've noticed a number of my Daily Protection Log's have error messages showing.

I've attached one as an example.  I'm asking just in case it sheds some insight to this issue.

Hello

The computer takes a while to boot 1-3 minutes.  After logging in to an account it can take up to 1-5 minutes for Comodo CIS to load.

Spyshelter first notification icon to appear.then MBAM Premium then eventually CIS

Note MBAM is setup to start with windows & early start as well as self protect.

Once user account is up & running other programs seem to take a while to load from clicking their respective desktop icons, sometimes (not often) I have to load them via the start button.

Frequent "Program not responding" especially with Windows Mail.

IE 11 I stopped using for both security reasons & that often I got "Program not responding"  same with Firefox but to a lesser extent I now use Chrome doesn't seem to have this problem.

MBAM has several times in the past refused to perform a Rootkit scan, one day it will the next it won't.

I've used CCleaner in it's default mode to try and fix possible issues and always keep a log.  This seems to help especially after  windows update Tuesday.

When things got bad I even used Tweaking.com - Windows Repair which helped and has reduced the frequency of the  "Program not responding"

I run a scheduled monthly windows disc cleanup & disc defragmenter.

Yes I did. Threat scan, Rootkit on.

I just took a quick look at my previous post and discovered that I had attached the wrong file.  01-03-2016 instead of 02-03-2016

Sorry. I will attach the correct file when I get home.

The wrong file MBAM-01-03-2016 was for my regular daily hyper scan, The Rootkit claims.

Memory: Enabled
Startup: Enabled
Filesystem: Disabled
Archives: Enabled
Rootkits: Disabled
Heuristics: Enabled
PUP: Enabled
PUM: Enabled

Why is it showing Rootkits: Disabled when I had set Rootkit scan a long long time ago and is in fact still ticked?
Why is Filesystem: Disabled?

I will attach the MBAM-02-03-2016 file for the threat scan you asked for when I get home.
Sorry

Okay, let's try to reinstall MalwareBytes. Make sure to save your license key, so that you can enter it again.

Please download MBAM-clean and save it to your desktop.

  • Right-click on mbam-clean.exe icon and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • It will ask you to reboot the machine - please do so.

Hello

Sorry didn't get back sooner, had to finish some homework for my OU course.

No. unfortunately It's real slow... and MBAM notification icon does not always load despite notifications being set to "show icon & notifications" the daily protection log says it was loaded.  However the icon in the notification area does not appear unless I open MBAM from the desktop icon.

Every program is real slow and takes an absolute age to load or respond.

Unless I restart the computer and on the 2nd boot it appears to run normally?

Please find attached a copy of the print screen of the error message from MBAM.

I had switched user from my admin account to my standard user account which took an age to load.  I then got the following message.

"Malwarebytes was unable to load the Anti-Rootkit DDA Driver, this error may be caused by rootkit activity. Do you want to reboot the system and attempt to install the driver?

(if you don't choose to reboot, Anti-Rootkit scanning will be disabled for this session)"

Ok.

First a thank you to TwinHeadedEagle for your support.

My OU coursework is beginning to take more time to research.  So this will probably be my last post for a while.

However today I did a google search at work during dinner break about the "unable to load the Anti-Rootkit DDA Driver" and I was appalled to noticed that this issue has been known since 2014.

Must admit to being surprised that it's still an issue in premium product considering they have had nearly two years to fix this issue.

I don't think I will renew my subscription when it runs out, begining to loose faith in the product.

Will look around for a suitable alternative.

Makes me wonder just how safe/effective/compatible MBAM really is.

I know that there is a security issue currently being worked on after the recent Google public disclosure.

I wonder how much longer the "unable to load the Anti-Rootkit DDA Driver" will take to fix if at all.

This makes me feel unprotected.
