I don't really know - I know there are pictures and things, but I think I did a backup through windows somehow; as I said, I'm never really sure what I did. My Outlook backup is on there, I think. I tried to look at it and figure it out, but I couldn't tell.

If you are making a clean install the option to format will be available during the process, or if you prefer you can format from a bootable tool... i give you both links:

I would recommend running Dariks secure wipe tool first to make sure the HD is securely formatted, then do the clean install from your installation DVD. Following that install your normal security set up. Then the long jog of windows updates followed by any software you normally use......

 

One thing i`ve learnt in this job, it is very beneficial to have an updated system image back up available for times like this. Nuke the hard drive then copy the image across, back up and running in a very short time....

Might I have that somewhere? Like on the external HD? Or is that not just a regular backup? So sorry for being ignorant about it :-(.

It really depends on the type of back up you made and save to the HD...

I would recommend yes on Darik, just be aware it does a three pass wipe and that can take several hours. Make sure you have the licence key for your installation DVD before you format the HD..
