Activate behind proxy

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've had a quick search for this as it seems like it should be a common problem.

Windows 8.1 computer - at the "Activate" stage, getting a message box telling me I need to be connected to the Internet.

In Process Explorer I see the mbam.exe process attempt to connect to an AWS instance but fails.

TCP computername:51625 ec2-52-4-11-233.compute-1.amazonaws.com:https SYN_SENT

This computer is behind a proxy and is unable to make a direct connection to AWS hence the reason it's failing.  Just the syn packet.

I can't seem to get mbam to use the proxy.

IE, Chrome and WinHTTP (32-bit and 64-bit (I see mbam.exe is a 32-bit process)) are all configured explicitly to talk to the proxy.
In Chrome, visiting:
ec2-52-4-11-233.compute-1.amazonaws.com
connects fine and I get an OK message.

Can mbam.exe use a proxy for registration?

Although I see both: Wininet and winhttp dlls loaded into the process, a quick look suggests it's just using a direct Winsock call.

Many thanks.

Hi:

Welcome.

Until @AdvancedSetup, @bdubrow or someone more knowledgeable than I can respond....

I know that *updating* behind a proxy is generally fine (I have no trouble on my laptop).
But I think some folks with certain proxies have run into issues with *activation*.

3 questions:

  1. What is the proxy?
  2. Have you tried to set an exclusion in your proxy to allow the activation????
  3. Do you get any sort of specific error (400, 401, etc.)?

While we wait, it might help to know a bit more about the system.
Please read the following and attach to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply, the proxy is a Sophos UTM but TBH, the proxy is irrelevant at this time as the Malwarebytes exe isn't even trying to connect to it.

There is no HTTP response code as we're only at the connection establishment phase, i.e. just a SYN packet.

As an aside, is that an Airdale or Welsh Terrier?  Hard to see the scale of the beast ;)

Regards.

Hi:

That's an Airedale Terrier, TFAOTP. :)

Thanks for asking.

  1. So, have you tried to set an exclusion in the proxy?
  2. Do you get an error code?
  3. Is this a work or business computer?

Hello:

I'm glad you resolved your issue. :)

However, you didn't answer the questions asked or post the requested logs. :(

Is this a work computer?

If so, please be aware that -- according to the EULA -- use of MBAM on a work or business computer requires business licensing.

Also, the current version of MBAM for Business is 1.80; version 2.2.0.1024 is for personal use only on home computers.

If you have a Consumer license, instead, you may wish to contact the Business Help Desk HERE

The Support staff there can assist you both with obtaining proper licensing and with technical support issues, such as activation behind a proxy.

Thanks for your support and understanding,
