Greetings :) .

It keepse backups of previously installed versions of files if that's what you mean, just in case an update causes an issue and you need to uninstall it. As far as copies of the updates you've downloaded in the form of the installers themselves, I believe these reside in one of your temp folders and get deleted whenever your temporary files are cleaned out.

If you've got SP2 installed you can execute the compcln tool. It will remove all the old versions of files left over from SP1 and the original versions backed up before that. Just keep in mind that it will mean you can't uninstall the old updates or Service Pack 2 once you've done it. To do so, simply click on the start orb and type cmd and press Enter then type the following into the black command window that opens:

Compcln.exe

For other update leftovers you can use a tool like CCleaner:

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Check the box next to "Hotfix Uninstallers"
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Registry" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

They can take up quite a bit of space over time, but removing them is entirely up to you :P . The only thing I listed to download was CCleaner. It's a tool used for cleaning up temp files and junk files that build up over time (including old update installers). You asked how to remove them previously, and I was simply providing some info on how to get rid of them. If you don't wish to remove them, which you certainly don't have to if you don't want, then you can just leave your PC as it is. I'm just trying to help :) .
