A while back I clicked upgrade for CCleaner and got a Trojan and other Viruses, I came here and all that was fixed.

There is a Pop up on my computer that comes up on the lower right side of the screen every once in a while to Upgrade CCleaner.

I am wondering if that might be what lead to the infection?

For one thing the Pop up came up today for a minute saying to save 650 Megabytes (Or something)

Open CLeaner with a button to OPEN.

Only thing is, before I shut down my computer last night I used CCleaner to clean out the cookies.

So, there was not 650 Megabytes of cookies - there were 0

Anyway, the question is - How do I get rid of that CCleaner Upgrade/Open Pop-up that Pops up every now and again as I am suspicious of it.

(I do like the current version of CCleaner and will not ever upgrade it because last time I did I had Virus come in with it)

Note : I use Malwarebytes and Zonealarm

Hi:

Welcome back. :)

I don't know where you've been getting your CCleaner and other downloads, but the legitimate installer directly from Piriform >>HERE<< or >>HERE<< is not infected.
Perhaps you are getting it from a 3rd-party site, with accompanying wrappers, PUPs, other junk or even malware?

Or perhaps the PUPs/malware are coming from another source, rather than the CCleaner download.

In any event, we cannot work on possible malware-related issues here in this particular section of the forum. :(

Such work is conducted in a special forum area reserved for that purpose, or at the help desk.

So, for expert assistance, I suggest that you might want to please follow the advice in this pinned topic: Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.
It explains the options for free, expert help >>AND<< the suggested, preliminary steps to expedite the process.
A malware analyst will assist you with looking into your issue - the helper will guide you through scanning and cleanup.

Thanks,

To answer your question and also to add that you should only download the slim version from here to install or upgrade

https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

Uncheck the circled item in settings.

^^ Excellent advice, @Porthos, especially for disabling the auto-update setting ^^

(I had included the link to the builds page with the slim installer, as well. ;)  If auto-updates are disabled, the OP will need to periodically manually check for program updates.)

The OP was recently infected (though it's not clear what the source may have been, and I doubt it was CCleaner, if the installer was from a legit source).

And, without a screenshot, we can't be sure the popup he describes is "real"?

So, it might still be a good idea to get a bit of free, expert help, if desired.

Doing so will only cost a bit of time.

Cheers,

  • 4 years later...

I got my CCleaner directly from the provider, Piriform and I have never had issues with it. I've had it for a few years and I upgrade it a few times and never had any infections or malware. Maybe you didn't get yours from the legitimate installer, that's why this happened. You should ******* for details about this. I didn't disable my auto-updates because I don't like to check from program updates manually every once in a while, but if you want to do that, I don't see a problem.
