How long did you wait at the black screen? If possible, leave it for an hour or two to see if it fixes itself.

Try to boot to Startup Repair.

To do this, force the system to reboot by holding down the power button (after the little spinning wheel thingie shows up).

Doing this 2 or 3 times should cause the system to reboot into Startup Repair.

If unable to do that, do you have recovery/repair media?

If so can it boot to Startup Repair?

Please provide the system specifications for more details

(particularly the Operating System that you're using)

You can also try these bootable diagnostics: http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html

That'll help rule out the memory and hard drive as problems.
