Hello.

Is anyone else noticing slow manual downloads from MBAM (mbam.exe /update). My Internet is fast since other places are fast. I am still using old versions (MBAM v1.75.0.1 & Windows XP Pro SP3).

Thank you in advance. :)

Hello Ant Dude:

I brought up an XP Home SP3 x86 system and deleted mbam.ref from a MBAM Pro 1.75.0.1300 install and downloaded the 8.3+ MB replacement database file in about 8 seconds from my currently assigned CDN.

For me, that is a very reasonable duration.  However, too many variables separate our two situations.

Please try again to see if it is sporadic.

Thank you.

Hi, @Ant Dude:

In addition to the excellent advice already offered...

You don't say if you are using the Free or the Premium version.

But, MBAM 2.2.0.1024 offers smaller, incremental database updates for both the Premium and the Free version (this is new since version 2.1.8).

Version 1.75 does not offer such incremental database updates for the Free version; incremental database updates are only available for the Premium verion.

So, if you are concerned about the speed of database updates, upgrading to the current program version would partially alleviate that.

Having said that, there are many other, more important reasons to upgrade to version 2.2.0.1024.

(And support for version 1.75 will end eventually.)

Cheers,

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75 (Released April 9, 2013) https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/3283-malwarebytes-anti-malware-history-updates/page-1  Post #17

Could be your MBAM is almost 3 years old.  Why not upgrade MBAM to 2.02.

I tried v2.0 in the past, but found it slow on this old machine. v1.75 still gets definition updates. ;)

What is the URL to this database file to see if it is faster for me?

I am using the free version.  I will upgrade when I get a faster and better machine.

Hello Ant Dude:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref

Using the above pathname, please try deleting the above MBAM database file and then "Check for Updates" in your usual manner if you would like to time the download duration of the replacement database from your currently assigned CDN.

Please report your results in a reply to this thread.

Thank you.

I deleted and downloaded it. It was slightly faster than earlier.

Hello Ant Dude:

Once the download's horizontal progress bar began to fill, how long did it take to completely fill the bar? This time of day does not see frequent MBAM database updates.

Thank you.

Several minutes. I am trying again right now, it is stuck at 5%. I also noticed when downloading my definitions, the pop-up updater window doesn't respond.sometimes. :/

And it just finished so that was a few minutes again. :)

Hello Ant Dude:

Before taking any further actions, please capture and report some current Internet performance statistics for your system:

  • Please restart your system and do not begin any other tasks. Wait until the system has finished all its usual startup chores.
  • Using any previously installed browser, run an Internet speed test by going to https://speedof.me and single-left-click the Start Test... button located near the lower left of the browser's window.  The speed test will only run for about a minute.
  • At the completion of all test sections, single-left-click the Share button and copy/paste the test result URL into a reply to this thread.

The test result you post will not reveal any personal information.

Thank you.

What is the purpose of using this command? (mbam.exe /update).

Why are you not updating from within the program?

Because I only wanted to update MBAM's definitions and not run MBAM. I mostly scan downloaded files in Windows Explorer's right click method.

FYI, I ran its updater just now and it was fast like it should!

1PW: Like I said earlier, it is not my Internet speed since I could go up to almost 7 mB/sec. I wonder if MBAM's connection/server is slow during evening to night hours (PST).

Hello Ant Dude:

Since the issue is not presently active, please monitor for future occurrences and reply to this thread if the status changes as this topic will remain open.

Thank you Ant Dude.

I just tried again, and it fast like it used to be. I hope it stays that way! :)

Yip, me too. For several days been trying to intiiate the scan (free version), "Check for Updates" goes on for 16+ minutes so I abort the whole thing. Just tried again and after nine minutes it finally started to scan. I scan almost every day and find at least one piece of malware with each scan so this is pretty important. Yes I need to upgrade and when I have extra cash I'll be sure to get that done. In the meantime, thanks Malwarebytes for everything you've done for me. And it's a lot.

If you already currently own a license of MBAM for an old version the upgrade to the new version is FREE...
