Cannot do an update or run a system scan

Recommended Posts

Hi.  Because I had high CPU usage from a Windows 10 process (svchost), I decided to install Malwarebytes, to see if the cause was malware.

I should have Malwarebytes now on my system. However, I've only got the following showing for my Apps:

* Malwarebyes Anti-Malware Chameleon.

* Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Notifications.

I think one time, earlier in the day, there was a third application, probably the Malwarebytes app itself.

On Task Manager, under background processes, I see the following is running: Malwarebytes Antimalware and under that heading MBAMService.

Earlier, in Windows Safe Safe Mode, I ran Chameleon, I went thru all 13 options, but never got Malwarebytes to update or run.

I'm not sure whether I actually have a virus or not. I seem to have "opencandy on my PC though.

I did do a reinstall, but that did not solve my problem.

What is the first thing I shouild do next? Thanks.

There are no rootkits pressent, by the way. When I ran Windows 10 Program CompatibiltyTroubleshooter I eventualy got a message "Incompatible Program".  I'm using install file "mbam-setup-2,2.0,1024". Have I gone an chosen the wrong installation file? I don't think so. I'm using Windows 10.

Okay, I got it working.

Basically, I followed the iontrsuctions here:

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/146017-mbam-clean-removal-process-2x/

Key thing, was to first turn off my usual antivirus application, then use the mbam-clean program.  After a reboot, again turn off my usual antivirus program and then install Mawarebytes.

I suppose I should do the scan with my usual antivirus program switched off.  And put it back on after Malwarebytes has run.

So, looks like my problem is solved.

Just in case your Antivirus is conflicting with Malwarebytes, you can add exclusions as listed below.

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software (not sure what version you are using):

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For 32 bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 & Windows 8 & Windows 10:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamresearch.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 / 8 & 10:
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamresearch.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware \mbamscheduler.exe
Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE, MBAMSERVICE.EXE and MBAMRESEARCH.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.
