Initially noticed an Action Center alert telling me to turn on Windows Security Center service but it wouldn't turn on. Then assorted browsers tabs would crash, then I received errors saying I was running out of memory and to close and reopen programs... I ran HJT and saw things I didn't recognize so I downloaded MBAM. I have McAfee which saw nothing. MBAM deletes 4 to 14 malware files which reappear after rebooting, even inSafe Mode. Sometimes, MBAM wouldn't run or would start and crash or do an incomplete scan. I have cleaned and redo loaded MBAM a few times but found that if I used Task Manager to stop the svchost process that was sucking the most memory and restarted MBAM, it would run a complete scan with no problems. Except that nothing stays gone... I have downloaded and run FarBar but wasn't sure if I should include the files now or wait for your say-so. BTW, I was unable to get a validation link on my Windows Live Mail Verizon.net account, requesting a resend 3 times in 56 hours, so I changed my account email to a Gmail.com account and received it right away. It also forwarded okay to one of my other Verizon accounts. And, yes, I DID check ALL my junk folders and other accounts...

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • We're primarily oriented on malware removal here, so you must know that some issues just cannot be solved and you must be prepared for this. Some tools we use here will remove your browser search history, so backup your important links and all the files whose loss is unacceptable.
  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time. Keep in mind that private life gets in the way too. Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a More reply options button, that gives you Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.
  • Always execute my instructions in given order. If for some reason you cannot completely follow one instruction, inform me about that.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

That being told, if any evidence of illegal OS, software, cracks/keygens or any other will be revealed, any further assistance will be suspended. If you are aware that there is this kind of stuff on your machine, remove it before proceeding!

The same applies to any use of P2P software: uTorrent, BitTorrent, Vuze, Kazaa, Ares... We don't provide any help for P2P, except for their removal. All P2P software has to be uninstalled or at least fully disabled before proceeding!

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.

Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Thanks, TwinHE, I will appreciate your assistance :)
I am in Southern California USA, going to bed pretty soon, but I am attaching the requested Farbar files. I will be reading my email at work on my iPad [leaving my regular mail closed] and will have my PC off until you request something that requires turning it on. Also, I read and understand the rules and policies.

  • Wait patiently until the main console will appear, it may take a minute or two.
  • In the main box please paste in the following script:
  • Make sure that Scan All Users option is checked.
  • Push Run Script and wait patiently. The scan may take a couple of minutes.
  • When the scan completes, a zoek-results logfile should open in notepad.
  • If a reboot is needed, it will be opened after it. You may also find it at your main drive (usually C:\ drive)

It's running the same, I'm afraid... 20+ svchost files running, vrtloaxg files in StartUp twice and the Security Center alarm in the Action Center pops up as soon as I try to open Chrome [which crashes, I had already turned off all extensions]... IE hasn't crashed yet but usually will if I open it via my Dell Dock. :(

  • Press Scan button and wait.
  • The tool will produce two logfiles on your desktop: FRST.txt and Addition.txt.

  • Accept the disclaimer and agree if prompted to install Recovery Console.
  • Do not take any actions while ComboFix goes through your System - it may cause it to stall!
  • This scan may take some time!
  • When finished - it will display a logfile (located also on your main drive, usually C:\ComboFix.txt).
Include that log in your next reply.

Everything seemed clear for about 5-10 minutes then I heard my hard drive start working overtime... Opened 'What's My Computer Doing?' and a list of random files are running whose details all say Mail.ru. The vrtloaxg.ex file is back. Startup is slow. And I have a real problem disabling my McAfee Security Center, I usually have to open my Task Manager and stop a bunch of processes for McAfee, some of which keep popping back on. I cannot run a virus scan and some tabs won't let me click through links to check stats and whatnot. It also says my last scan was May 2014... I am including a new FarBar scan, as you usually ask for one when I finish the most current tests...

Download 51a5f31352b88-icon_MBAR.pngMalwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to your desktop.

  • Double-click the icon to start the tool.
  • It will ask you where to extract it, then it will start.
  • Warning! Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit needs to be run from an account with administrator rights.
  • Click in the introduction screen "next" to continue.
  • Click in the following screen "Update" to obtain the latest malware definitions.
  • Once the update is complete select "Next" and click "Scan".
  • When the scan is finished and no malware has been found select "Exit".
  • If malware was detected, make sure to check all the items and click "Cleanup". Reboot your computer.
  • Open the MBAR folder and attach the content of the following files in your next reply:
    • "mbar-log-{date} (xx-xx-xx).txt"
    • "system-log.txt"
