Malwarebytes Requests I Temporarily Disable Antivirus and Firewall for Program Update?

Recommended Posts

Good day, everyone. I'm using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Free) 2.1.8.1057. My computer's operating system is Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit.

I've been using Malwarebytes for nearly two months, now, with no actual problems. Any problems I had were quickly resolved by simple measures.

Here is my current issue: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware notifies me that an update is available to install every time I open the program. However, when I clicked through to the setup wizard, it requested that I temporarily disable my antivirus and my firewall before proceeding.

Is this normal, and should I do this? I have the free version which obviously does not include real-time protection. Do I still need to disable my antivirus as well as my firewall just to install the latest version of Malwarebytes?

Hello and Welcome!

It is suggested to do so, but to be honest, I have been updating Malwarebytes for many years and I have never disable my AV or firewall to do so. Of course everyone's computer is different and I don't know what AV or Firewall software your using.

I say go ahead and try to install it and see if you get any errors or problems.

I am using Bitdefender and I consistently have to turn off both active AV scanning and the Intrusion Protection module when updating versions of MBAM.  If not, the MBAM version upgrade just quits because BD blocked it.

It is just a few keystrokes, so no big deal.  I like the fact that Bitdefender is "suspicious" of what MBAM is trying to do.  I do have exclusions in both products, and MBAE, so normally they get along just great.

As Firefox said, other anti-virus products might not be so "defensive."  The worst that can happen is that the MBAM version upgrade gets blocked by your anti-virus.

Have a great day.

Regards,

-Phil
