CPU at 100%, unremovable malware?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have a few computer problems that I hope you can help me with:

- Have a gaming PC (or so I am told) with high-end parts, but can't even watch HD

- Don't do gaming or anything that would take up space, but my C: partition is full (9 GB of 160 GB free)

- CPU usage goes up to 100%, PC lags horribly as soon as I open YouTube or anything like that.

I once downloaded something that came with malware, winSpeed.dll by publisher 24soft. I could not remove it through Uninstall, so I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and ran a Scan, which seems to have removed WinSpeed from the list of programs. However, problems persist. I have attached the required log data. I would be so grateful for any hints!

I also have a few questions:

- I made a backup a week ago. That took up 9 DVDs. I guess I can trash that if indeed I have a virus?

- Could they have installed a key logger? Is there any way to find out? Do they have access to my accounts (including bank accounts?)? Is there any way to protect myself?

Thank you very much in advance!

The CPU problem persists (still 100% and lagging with HD), while the C: Partition is now 12 GB of 160 free (before I downloaded all those programs and ran the scans, it was 9GB).

Is there any way I can see what makes up thos 148 GB on my C: partition?

Thank you again very much for your reply!

Run the following:

Please download RogueKiller and save it to your desktop from the following link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/roguekiller/

  • Quit all running programs.
  • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
  • For Vista,Windows 7/8/8.1/10, Right-click on the program and select Run as Administrator to start and when prompted allow it to run.
  • Read and accept the EULA (End User Licene Agreement)
  • Click Scan to scan the system.
  • When the scan completes select "Report",in the next window select "Export txt" the log will open as a text file post that log... Also save to your Desktop for reference. log will open.
  • Close the program > Don't Fix anything!

Next,

Run FRST one more time, ensure all boxes are checkmarked under "Whitelist" but only Addition.txt under "Optional scan" Select scan, when done post the two logs....

Let me see those logs...

Those logs posted are clean, what is the current status of your system, any remaining issues or concerns. Regarding what is on your Hard drive, download and install WinDirStat that will tell exactly what is on your HD:

http://www.fosshub.com/WinDirStat.html

Read the instructions at that link to be aware of its potential and find out exactly what is using the space on your HD

Thanks for this confirmation and for the link! I can only access my PC again on Tuesday, but when I tried this morning, the CPU problem persisted, any video I try to watch is still lagging heavily. It's probably not the internet connection, or could the internet connection be bad enough for the CPU to go up to 100% when I go online? Did you see anything in my file logs that could have been a keylogger?

Your hard drive is almost full, for windows to work correctly and efficiently there must be a minimum of 15% free space.

Run the following online AV scan for thorough check.... it will take several hours to complete:

ESETOnline.png Scan with ESET Online Scanner

This step can only be done using Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
Temporary disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware protection - instructions here.
Please visit ESET Online Scanner website.

Click there Run ESET Online Scanner.

If using Internet Explorer:

  • Accept the Terms of Use and click Start.
  • Allow the running of add-on.

If using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome:
  • Download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe that you'll be given link to.
  • Double click esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe.
  • Allow the Terms of Use and click Start.

To perform the scan:

  • Make sure that Remove found threats is unchecked.
  • Scan archives is checked.
  • In Advanced Settings: Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications and Enable Anti-Stealth technology are checked.
  • Under “Enable Stealth Technology select “Change” select any extra drives in that window.
  • Click Start
  • The program will begin to download it's virus database. The speed may vary depending on your Internet connection.
  • When completed, the program will begin to scan. This may take several hours. Please, be patient.
  • Do not do anything on your machine as it may interrupt the scan.
  • When the scan is done, click Finish.
  • A logfile will be created at C:\Program Files (x86)\ESET\ESET Online Scanner. Open it using Notepad.

Please include this logfile in your next reply.

Don't forget to re-enable security software!

Thank you,

Kevin...

The biggest amount of data to reclaim is via removal of the Windows.old folder 56.4 GB, that folder was created 24/11/2013 when the system was re-installed without formatting the hard drive first. As it has been sitting for almost 2 years I guess its safe to remove.. We can do that with FRST, also remove the entries flagged by ESET..

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into.
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Post that log, also let me know if there are any remaining issues or concerns.....

Thank you,

Kevin...

Thank you! I didn't quite catch how to remove the Windows.old folder 56.4 GB, should I just delete it, should I run the WinDirStat Scan and then delete it, or should I deinstall it, or should I do the FRST thing first and that somehow removes the folder?

Runnning the ESET Scan again to remove the entries it found. Thanks!

mmm, I guess that is really to be expected. If that problem was down to malware/infection i`d expect the memory reading to be higher too...

Run the following to clean up, see what happens when you are not streaming videos.....

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

  •
  • Remove disinfection tools

  • Purge System Restore <--- this will remove all previous and possibly exploited restore points, a new point relative to system status at present will be created.

  • Reset system settings

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…

Cheers,

Kevin..
