Malicious Website Protection - Outbound with chrome.exe and svchost.exe

Hello, upon turning on my computer today I received multiple warnings from Malwarebytes. They appeared to be multiple outbound attempts from both "C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe", which attempted to access an IP address. And from "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe", which had both an IP address and "4-undefined.facebook.com". I believe the second happened after opening chrome, though I'm not sure and have not yet seen it again.

Scanning with Malwarebytes did not find any issues. I have seen that this may be a potential rootkit, but I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is from the protection log:

Thanks - the reports are copied below and one is attached. Note that while browsing the web after this I also just got warnings for chrome.exe on three different urls "um.simpli.fi", "i.simpli.fi", and "www.simpli.fi". Also while running RogueKiller I got continuous prompts to upload "temp/bootstrap.dmp" to VirusTotal. I hit "yes" on the first one but it continued to pop up, I eventually hit "never" and it continued.

Small update - tried unplugging my ethernet cable and plugging it back in. Conistently get the 92.242.140.21 - svchost.exe warning as soon as I plug it back in, so it seems at least partially related to that initial connection. Message popped up again after about an hour with no obvious trigger that time though.

One more note - based on other topics this seems pretty similar to the Avast issue that so many people are having. The only issue with my side is that I do not have Avast installed and have not seen that error, at least not as far as I know. Given the timing I'm assuming my issue is at least related to that specific one though.

Run the following:

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into.
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Next,

51a612a8b27e2-Zoek.pngScan with ZOEK

Please download ZOEK by Smeenk from here: http://hijackthis.nl/smeenk/ and save it to your desktop (preferred version is the *.exe one)
Temporary disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware protection - instructions here.

  • Right-click on 51a612a8b27e2-Zoek.png icon and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Wait patiently until the main console will appear, it may take a minute or two.
  • In the main box please paste in the following script:

services_list;standardsearch;autoclean;emptyclsid;emptyfolderscheck;deleteiedefaults;firefoxlook;chromelook;FFdefaults;CHRdefaults;

  • Make sure that Scan All Users option is checked.
  • Push Run Script and wait patiently. The scan may take a couple of minutes.
  • When the scan completes, a zoek-results logfile should open in notepad.
  • If a reboot is needed, it will be opened after it. You may also find it at your main drive (usually C:\ drive)

Please include its content in your next reply. Don't forget to re-enable security software!

Let me know if any remaining issues or concerns...

Thank you,

Kevin...

Thanks so much for your help Kevin. I ran both of the tools and have attached their output below.

Unfortunately however I am still getting the svchost.exe warning on startup. I have attached a screenshot of the warning and also went ahead and ran another scan with FRST, the log file for that is also attached.

Continue please:

1.Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from this link:

 http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/mbar/

2. Unzip the File to a convenient location. (Recommend the Desktop)
3. Open the folder where the contents were unzipped to run mbar.exe

Image1.png

4. Double-click on the mbar.exe file, you may receive a User Account Control prompt asking if you are sure you wish to allow the program to run. Please allow the program to run and MBAR will now start to install any necessary drivers that are required for the program to operate correctly. If a rootkit is interfering with the installation of the drivers you will see a message that states that the DDA driver was not installed and that you should reboot your computer to install it. You will see this image:

mbarwm.png

5. If you receive this message, please click on the Yes button and Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit will now restart your computer. Once the computer is rebooted and you login, MBAR will automatically start and you will now be at the start screen. (If no Rootkit warning you will go from step 4 to 6.)

6. The following image opens, select Next.

Image2.png

7. The following image opens, select Update

Image3.png

8. When the update completes select Next.

Image4.png

9. In the following window ensure "Targets" are ticked. Then select "Scan"

Image5.png

10. If an infection is found select the "Cleanup Button" to remove threats, Reboot if prompted. Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.

MBAntiRKcleanA.png

11. Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click "Cleanup Button" once more and repeat the process.
12. If no threats were found you will see the following image, Select Exit:

Image6.png

13. Verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:

  •
  • Internet access

  • Windows Update

  • Windows Firewall

14.  If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the 'fixdamage' tool included within Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit folder.

15. Select "Y" from your Keyboard, tap Enter.

16. The fix will be applied, select any key to Exit.

17. Let me know how your system now responds. Copy and paste the two following logs from the mbar folder:

System - log
Mbar - log   Date and time of scan will also be shown

Thanks,

Kevin...

Poked around a bit more and got another message that I've posted below, specifically when visiting a page on "www.tomshardware.com". Based on one of your posts in another topic I also tried to reset my router. I was able to do this but when I went to the url to access the router (https://192.168.1.1/), Chrome gave me a privacy warning, which I have also posted below. Not sue if Chrome always does this with that page or if this is a sign of a bigger issue.

After doing this and rebooting a couple of times I am no longer seeing the warnings! That said the issue has not been fully consistent so it may pop back up, but as of now it appears to be solved. Two additional questions:

1) Poking around the forum it seems like multiple people on Verizon have had this issue. Do you think I should consider this to just be something weird with Verizon, or should I be concerned about my router and other devices on the network?

2) Is there anything else I need to run to wrap things up?

Thank you so much for your support!

To close up we need to run Delfix to remove tools etc. Do the following:

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

  •
  • Remove disinfection tools

  • Purge System Restore <--- this will remove all previous and possibly exploited restore points, a new point relative to system status at present will be created.

  • Reset system settings

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…

Next,

Read the following links to fully understand PC Security and Best Practices, you may find them useful....

Answers to Common Security Questions and bst Practices

Do I need a Registry Cleaner?

Next,

Regarding the origin of your problem, to be honest not really sure. Do not think this is a Verizon problem, too many systems have the same problem, lots none Verizon... I look for an answer from the many threads that are running, what I give you seems to have given a good result.

Let me know if/when we are ok to close out...

Thank you,

Kevin...
