Mbam & Trend Micro AntiVirus + Security

Recommended Posts

Hello: I recently installed (yesterday) Trend AV & was prompted on install to uninstall Mbam Pro as it was a conflicting program which I did - I was able however from looking on forums to see that by adding Trend as an exception to Mbam & vice versa I could get them running together which they do seemigly without issues .

However one of the recommendations was to add the entire Malwarebytes folder to Trends exceptions (which I've done) but it also mentioned adding 'mbam.sys' which supposedly is in System32/drivers however on this PC & my other PC it isn't maybe because things have changed? My question is does mbam.sys still exist & if not is there any other parts of Malwarebytes that I need to add to Trends exceptions? - Reason for using Trend is I got licences very cheap & actually pretty impressed with it as much as ESET i used previously.

Sorry for rambling :-)

Hello and welcome back:

The insistence by some of the major AV vendors that MBAM be (at least temporarily) uninstalled in order to install their product is based largely on marketing concerns, not on true software compatibility issues.

MBAM Premium is designed to run alongside all of the major AVs.
In some cases, it's not a bad idea to follow the process you did: uninstall MBAM > install AV > reinstall MBAM.

As far as mutual exclusions, the screenshot below shows how to add the TM folder to the MBAM exclusions.
The MBAM files to add to the TM exclusions are listed below - the instructions don't specifically mention Windows 10, but the process is the same.

Let us know if you need more help.

Thanks,

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software for your version of Windows:

For 32 bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 & Windows 8:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamresearch.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista, Windows 7 & Windows 8:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamresearch.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware \mbamscheduler.exe

Note: If you are using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall, you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE, MBAMSERVICE.EXE and MBAMRESEARCH.EXE from it, as well.

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

If you add the entire Trend Micro folder to the MBAM exclusions; don't you create a situation where malware can hide from action by Malwarebytes inside the Trend Micro folder?

Thanks!

In a sense, yes, but in the grand scheme of things, no.

  1. Starting with Windows Vista and continuing on through Windows 10, Unless someone has direct access to your system, they cannot write directly to \Program Files nor \Program Files (x86) without first writing a file somewhere else, such as in a temp folder.  UAC prevents direct writing to the folder unless you either
    1. Turn it off, or
    2. Allow a program direct access with cached credentials.
  2. Any other folder that is not specifically excluded will still get scanned.
  3. The malware would also have to be able to hide from Trend Micro as well, since TM is not ignoring its own folder.

So, while it is theoretically possible, it would take a good bit of engineering to make it happen.
