Pros and cons of using "warn user about detections" instead of other options?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've had Malwarebytes Premium for years now, but never really thought too much about the PUP/PUM protection settings until now for some reason... I just always left them both set as "treat detections as malware" since that was the default setting when I first got it and that just sounded like the safest option to me anyways.

I don't remember ever having had malware/viruses on my computer yet (never had MBAM detect any), so I haven't been able to test or see the difference between "treat detections as malware" and "warn user about detections," which is what my question here is about.

I know that there's potential for some PUPs to be things I might actually want or need on my computer, but probably way more potential for them to be things I don't want. That makes me lean towards just leave the setting as "treat detections as malware" to be safe. But then what about the rare scenario when I actually need or want to keep the PUP it detects? Will I still have an option to stop it from deleting or whatnot if I have it set to "treat as malware?"

I know from the MBAM support guide that the other setting, "warn user about detections" will ask you what you want to do with the PUP, so that leads me to believe that "treat detections as malware" has to be different in some way, so I figured it means it automatically deletes the PUP without asking? The guide just says that "corrective actions will occur," and I'm not sure what that means.

So I'm kind of asking if someone can explain the pros and cons of those two different settings, or maybe I just need to know what exactly "corrective actions will occur" means? Will I get a chance to cancel/ignore a PUP detection if it's "treated as malware?"

Sorry for using so many words to ask what is probably a more basic question (I'm a little OCD about details, plus kind of an amateur with computer stuff, haha)

Thanks in advance!

Hello and :welcome: :

"Warn" means that MBAM will detect the items, but not automatically remove them. It will be up to the user to decide whether to keep or remove any particular detection.

"Treat Detections as Malware" means that MBAM will both detect and automatically quarantine the items.  That is the default setting for PUPs and PUMs.

There is more information about PUPs here: What are the 'PUP' detections, are they threats, and should they be deleted?
While they are not malware, per se, I wouldn't want any of that junk on my own systems.

However, it's up to the user. :)
