DNS Unlocker and more

Recommended Posts

I am running  Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium since 2014 along side Norton 360 Prmeier (that is more recent upgrade, a few months ago but before that always running current Norton product).  So I was shocked when all of a sudden my computer started getting ads from DNS Unlocker.    What I don't understand is, why this could happen?  A scan from both Norton and Malwarebytes show NOTHING, and in trying to track this down a couple of sites recommended Spyhunter (I did first folllow a bunch of different recommendations to remove the malware but it comes back after a few minutes).  To my suprise, Spyhunter shows 275 threats - now I realize they want me to spend money (unlike Malwarebytes that will fix problems for free and helping a customer back a few years back clean a virus convinced me I should go ahead and get that paid Malwarebytes version) so I realize they are taking every single possible cookie, etc and show it and call it adware but I still can't figure out how between my  Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium subscription AND Norton my system shows ZERO problems when clearly there is one (for sure the DNS Unlocker as it at least tags itself when presenting this endless ads), here is just a short list of the ones found by Spyhunter (I am typing this on my tablet so hand retyping the list):

2o7

Adserver

Adtech

Advert

Adware Helper

Adware MovieDea

Atlast DMT

Atwola

pup,crossbrowser

the list goes on and on.

The system is so bad (there is other behavior, going program to program is slow and this on an I-7 with an SSD driver and the screen flikcers - I think because it has slowed down so much) and I am in a position that I can reformat the hard drive and start over that I am thinking of just doing that - but the question is how Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium be missing all of these?  I recommend it to clients, etc but what ever web site I visited on Thursday (I can't remember anything special, but that is when it happened), totally took over a machine with zero problems for years, with zero warning and zero fixes.

I have not done the restore yet, I would obvioulsy like to avoid that, but like I said, I can if I have to, but the other point is, what am I paying for (and telling clients to buy) if this can happen?

Thank you for tips, help, and answers!

the first steps I have already done, no issue there but Norton 360 stops me cold at the download of First64.exe (STEP 2)  - it removes it saying it is unsafe (THIS it catches but not the stuff that actually damages the computer).

2. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) and save it to a folder.

BUT I am willing to just redo the entire system, the major question is still, is Norton 36o AND Malware Bytes Premium (paid) not enough to protect your system? (well, obviously it is not), so what else is needed?  Is this Spyhunter thing needed to or is there another product needed in addition to Norton plus Malwarebytes?

THANK YOU!

Please stay away from Spyhunter!!!

You can read about the infection and how it may have gotten on the system here:

FRST is the log I need to see.......see if you can allow the program or disable Norton.
I've also zipped and attached FRST64.exe
See if that fools Norton

Please uninstall this crap: ----->>>>>SpyHunter 4

===============================

Your log says that:
ATTENTION: System Restore is disabled

Please enable it!

===============================

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same folder as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe.
Run FRST.exe/FRST64.exe and click Fix only once and wait
The tool will create a log (Fixlog.txt) in the folder, please post it to your reply.

=============================

Download zoek.exe to your Desktop:
http://hijackthis.nl/smeenk/

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware programs, so they do not interfere with the running of Zoek.exe. You can find instructions how to disable your security applications Here
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

On Windows Vista, 7, and 8, right-click Zoek.exe and select: Run as Administrator
Give it a few seconds to appear

Next, copy/paste the entire script inside the codebox below to the input field of Zoek:

autoclean;
emptyalltemp;
emptyclsid;

Now...
Close any open programs.
Click the Run script button, and wait. It takes a few minutes to run.

When the tool finishes, the zoek-results.log is opened in Notepad.
The log is also found on the systemdrive, normally C:\
If a reboot is needed, the log is opened after the reboot.

Those are both empty - I think created when I was bringing some data over on a USB hard drive (from a virus free computer)

Attached are

FRST.txt

Fixlog.txt

Addition.txt

AdwCleaner.txt (downloaded from link you provided)

MBAMKneebone0818.txt <<< from MBAM scan with settings as you instructed.

I think I go the checklist right (hopefully).

Thank you!

Seems to be OK so far...

So this is a family of tools you have figured out to remove a series of viruses, ad ware, etc?

I'll be doing a donation tomorrow morning when I get in the office! (I would have anyway, given your advice even if we could not get this off because, believe it or not, I am still going to restore the system to out of the box, turn on system restore and set up checkpoints).

So this is a family of tools you have figured out to remove a series of viruses, ad ware, etc?

Yes, we have available many tools devolved by people in the community.

============================

If there's no other problems.........

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • If you get Unsupported operating system. Aborting now, just reboot and try again.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.
  • If you can't post it, attach it

That looks Good!

A little clean up to do....

Please Uninstall ComboFix: (------->if you used it<-------)

Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"

Copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

cf2.jpg

Then hit enter. (it may look like CF is re-installing but it's not)
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point

(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall or download and run the uninstaller)

---------------------------------

bwebb7v.jpgDownload Delfix from here and save it to your desktop. (you may already have this)

  • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is checked.
  • Click the Run button.
  • Reboot

Any other programs or logs that are still remaining, you can manually delete. (right click.....Delete)

-------------------------------

Any questions...please post back.

If you think I've helped you, please leave a comment > click on my avatar picture > click Profile Feed.

Good Luck and Thanks for using the forum, MrC
