MALWAREBYTES FREE VERSION IS STARTING UP MANY TIMES PER HOUR

Hello All, 

 

I have the latest Free version of MalwareBytes - since the [upgraded] installation it now Starts Up / displays on screen about every 15 minutes that my computer is turned on.

 

So - for example Computer on for 4 Hours = MalwareBytes opens on screen 16 or more times during that period.

 

Unfortunately I find this really irritating and I cannot see any way to prevent this from happening - ?

 

My previous Free version of MalwareBytes did NOT do this and with the possible exception of an Automatic Scan each day it did not Open / Start Up until I clicked onto the Icon when I wanted to run the Scanner.

 

I used my previous version for about 3 Years - probably updating when prompted.

 

I have looked in the Settings menu but I cannot see any setting alteration that could stop this far too frequent Opening of the program / software.

 

I think that because I have the free version there are very few Settings available to Users anyway ?

 

I would be very grateful for some help with this Please.

 

Please excuse my lack of Computing terminology - I have very little experience in Computing having come to it very late in life and even then only using my Computer for very basic `Word processing` and browsing the Internet.

 

My Computer uses Windows 7 Home Premium and Internet Explorer 11 - just in case this is relevant to this latest Free version.

MBAM Free is ONLY a manual, on-demand scanner with no automated tasks.
From your description, it sounds as if you might have used the Trial version at one point; the Trial may have expired, but some of the settings may have remained.

 

So let's start here:

Thank You very much for your help with this problem and thank you for replying to me so quickly.

 

I have used the information that You gave me the links to and carried out a clean uninstall and clean install - the Malwarebytes scanner then ran and updated itself [i had left the tick for Launch after install on the installer tool].

 

The new download of Malwarebytes Free version is now carrying out its `First Scan of this Computer` [words to that effect] - so I cannot tell yet whether I will no longer have the repeated Opening / Displaying on screen of the Malwarebytes Dashboard - I will of course update You with this information.

 

 

 

Your comments about there possibly being some settings left over from the Malwarebytes Trial version could be correct - please excuse the fact that until You mentioned this I had forgotten that at the initial Upgrade I did NOT notice to untick the Trial version box so I ended up with that version [Trial version].

 

When I saw the reminders that the Trial was about to expire I uninstalled it using an Uninstaller Software Program that I have on my Computer - this is called `Revo Uninstaller` and I am under the impression that `it removes more associated Files when uninstalling than any other Uninstaller Software`

- seemingly not if there were settings still left over from the Malwarebytes Trial version.

 

I then downloaded the Free version of Malwarebytes from the Malwarebytes official download website - I Opened the program and went through the Installation process.

 

Almost immediately on installation the Malwarebytes scanner kept Starting Up / Opening / Displaying on screen [sorry about my lack of Computing terminology] - this was happening at least 4 times per hour - probably more like 6 or 7 times per hour.

For the record (and for anyone else reading this thread), it's generally not needed to use Revo Uninstaller for a clean MBAM reinstall.

Rather, the "best practices" would be to follow the steps here, using our own, special removal tool and rebooting when prompted: MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x

 

The Trial version is available 1 time per computer per MBAM program version and it is enabled by default.

So, if one does not want the Trial, one needs to disable (un-tick) that option during the setup wizard, if it is offered.

(It can also be turned off later, during the 14-day period, by one of several methods, if needed; or it can be allowed to expire after 14 days.)

 

It's a good idea to reboot the computer again after completing the reinstall, even if you are not prompted to do so.

 

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your reply.

 

I know that You wrote about not having to use the Revo Uninstaller for future readers of this thread - but I just wanted to explain that I used it because I have previously found it does a better job of removing `Leftover Files` after an Uninstall than the Windows Uninstaller.

 

Revo uses the Software`s own Uninstaller and then looks for Leftover Files - there are sometimes MANY of these even after the uninstalled software`s uninstaller has supposedly removed everything - sometimes Hundreds of those leftover files.

 

I knew that most [All ?] Software had its own Uninstaller but I would not have known how to access the Malwarebytes one and as I had my `Revo Professional Uninstaller` I felt that I did not need to look for it.

 

I have this Uninstaller Software because when I first began using a Computer - with no knowledge on Computing at all - I was obviously making mistakes in what Software / Scanners etc. I liked the look of and then installed on my Computer - I obtained the Revo Uninstaller in order to correctly remove these products if / when they became detrimental to my Computer as I had no knowledge on how to do it any other way - at that time I did not even know about the Windows Uninstaller.

 

At the point of writing this reply to You the Malwarebytes Scanner had finished scanning my Computer about 30 minutes or more ago - it has not Opened / Displayed the Dashboard on screen - previously during that amount of time it would have displayed at least 2 or 3 times - this is obviously a good sign that what You suggested has worked.

Yes, thanks for the additional info.

We are familiar with Revo.  But the special mbam-clean removal tool is specifically written by Malwarebytes to properly remove MBAM.
 
Anyway, you should be all set now after the clean reinstall. :)

Hello again,

I was not trying to state that using the Revo Uninstaller is a better method of completely uninstalling Malwarebytes - just explaining why I initially carried out the Uninstall of the Trial version using that Software.

I do realise that a dedicated Uninstaller produced specifically by the manufacturers to uninstall a Software product should always be the Best way to go - but You can see from my previous explanation that I did not know how to quickly access it in this case and rather than be possibly browsing the Internet for some time to find the Malwarebytes Uninstaller I used my Revo Uninstaller Software.

I did try a Support enquiry about the problem described in my previous message - submitted online to Malwarebytes Support but I did not even get an acknowledgement Email let alone a reply - I then found the Forum on Friday night and received excellent help from You within less than 10 minutes - Thank You so much.

I have been using my Computer for a few hours again tonight [saturday / Sunday] and I have not had any instances of the Malwarebytes dashboard displaying on screen - as I stated in my original message that had previously been happening at least 4 to 6 times per hour.

Thanks to your excellent advice and the links to further information that you provided I have obviously managed to rectify the problem.
