MB scan cancelled in Safe Mode

I've been trying to run a scan in Safe Mode, but it cancels at about step 2 or so.  Is this to be expected?

 

Will post further details later, but I only have a minute or two and want to get this posted.  My XP laptop seems to infected with I don't know what, but appears to be crippled except when running in Safe Mode, hence my attempt to run MB there.

Apologies: having looked a bit further, it looks as though my problem too is related to the ?25 July update, so I'll go and read that instead.
