Hi

My PC got infected with a malware where all the files on a usb stick/pen drive have turned to a .lnk shortcut. So I ran my anitvirus program and malwarebytes and quarantine all scanned objects in Windows 7 safe mode. When I normally boot Windows 7 I cannot run mbam. Please find attached the mbam log file. However, after removal of some identified objects I still have the same problem and nothing seems to work. I have also used Combofix (please find .log attached) , and I still have the same problem. Some of the found objects are kvwpjmygvjs, a Trojan.LNK.Gen, js.proslikefan.13.

I am happy about any help given

Thanks in advance.

Why did you run FRST with the system in Safe mode with Networking?

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into.
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

ESET log identifies entries already in Combofix quarantine so no problem. The other entry classed as unsafe is in your downloads folder, you can safely delete that file..

Regarding USB devices, make sure they are unplugged; we do not wnat to run the risk of a reinfection.

Go to this link: http://www.mcshield.net/screenshots.html

Download and install McShield, that program will run at boot and scan all connected drives. It will also protect and scan any USB devices as they are plugged in after a boot...

Let me know the current status of your system, can you boot to normal mode, are there any other remaining issues or concerns....

Thank you,

Kevin...

Thanks again for your help. Unfortunately McShield did not find anything but I continue to have the same problems. Please find attached the .log file. Additionally I still can only run all anti-malware programs under windows safe mode. However, I can boot into normal mode but the anti-malware programs (only those) will not open then.

Click on "Start" type cmd.exe into the search box. cmd.exe will show, Right click on that entry and select "Run as Administrator" and click on OK.

Here I assume your pendrive as X:

Enter this command. Highlight the command then Right click - Copy. At the cmd prompt Right click - Paste

attrib -h -r -s /s /d x:\*.* hit the enter key...

Note : Replace the letter X with your flash drive letter....

Do the files now show OK?

Next,

Download RKill from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/

There are three buttons to choose from with different names on, select the first one and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7/8, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • A log pops up at the end of the run. This log file is located at C:\rkill.log. Please post this in your next reply.
  • If you do not see the black box flash on the screen delete the icon from the desktop and go back to the link for the download, select the next button and try to run the tool again, continue to repeat this process using the remaining buttons until the tool runs. You will find further links if you scroll down the page with other names, try them one at a time.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

When RKill completes try your security programs in Normal mode, Malwarebytes, then scan with your AV program... if the fail again continue as follows...

Next,

Run FRST one more time (try from Normal mode), ensure all boxes are checkmarked under "Whitelist" but only Addition.txt under "Optional scan" Select scan, when done post the two logs....

If FRST fails to run in Normal mode rename it to easy.com You will need to "show" file extensions first as follows:

  • Click the Start menu. ...
  • Type "folder options" (without the quotes). ...
  • A dialog box with the title "Folder Options" will appear. ...
  • Click to uncheck the box for "Hide extensions for known file types".
  • Click the "Apply" button, then the "OK" button at the bottom of the dialog box.

When that is complete right click on FRST.exe and rename to easy.com Run the scan as listed above..

Thank you,

Kevin

Thank you again for your help. I could recover the files from the USB drives but still continue to have the same problems on my PC. RKill ran under normal mode but First did not work, even after renaming it to easy.com. It opened correctly but then searched for an update and it quit after updating. I have tried it several times with the same "success". So I ran it under safe mode. Please find attached the logs. Unfortunatelty it did not help-

Thanks again

Do you have access to another PC to create the Widows Defender Offline Tool, I give the instructions to load to a USB flash drive. It can also be run from a CD, just change to that option in the instructions…

It can be created from the PC with issues, but a different clean PC is preferred!

Download the tool from here :- http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline and save to the Desktop.

You will have to select the correct version for your system, either 32 or 64 bit

Run the tool, Windows 7 or Vista user right click and select "Run as Administrator"

Read the instructions in the new window and select "Next"

WD2.png

In the new window accept the agreement:

WD2a.png

In the new window select your USB Flash Drive, then select "Next"

WD3.png

In the new window ensure you Flash drive is selected, if not click on "Refresh" then select "Next"

WD3a.png

In the new window accept the formatting alert by selecting "Next"

WD3b.png

Files will be Downloaded:

WD4.png

Files will be processed and created

WD5.png

Flash drive will be formatted and prepared

WD6.png

Files will be added to the Flash Drive and the tool will be created.

WD7.png

The procedure is finished and the Tool created, click on "Finish" to complete.

WD8.png

Plug the USB into the sick PC and boot up, if it does not boot from the flash drive change the boot options as required, Use F12 as it boots, change options...

As it boots you`ll see files being loaded and the windows splash screen, eventually the tool will run a "Quick Scan" follow the prompts and deal with what it finds.

When complete do a full scan, deal with what it finds.

When finished, remove the USB stick then press the Esc key to boot into regular windows.

Navigate to the following file:

"C:\Windows\Windows Defender Offline\Support\MPLog-MM/DD/YYYY-HH/MM/SS .txt"

Open with notepad and copy and paste it into a reply.....

Thanks,

Kevin..
