Browser redirect issue

Recommended Posts

Recently My web browsers, both Firefox and IE are having their URL redirected to a Microsoft security website that says I have been infected with a virus and they (of course) want me to download the anti-virus software to remove it. How do I correct this?? I have run Malwarebytes Anti-malware and fixed what it found, but the problem persists.

Here is the Anti-malware Log:

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Then, * Download: HostsXpert

Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\HostsXpert

Start HostsExpert.exe, click 'Restore MS Hosts file' and click OK.

Then, Hi,

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • In case you can't update the database via the update option, please download and install the database from here. Only do this when the update option doesn't work.
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a full scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

System appears to be running great, no redirect issues with firefox at all.

Below is posted the most recent HJT log. If you see anything else amiss please let me know, other than that I think it's fixed. Thanks for the help, you have been a lifesaver!!!

Hi,

Everything looks OK again here :P

One thing.... Update your Sun Java, because previous versions are vulnerable:

Updating Java:

  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it: javaicon.gif
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

Then, Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
