svchost.exe Virus?

Recommended Posts

I am running Windows 7 and the computer is really slow on startup. I have used Task Manager to find that svchost.exe is using massive amounts of memory. It gradually decreases as the computer warms up, but such a delay on everything I want to do is maddening. I'm not sure if this is malware, and if it is not, is there any way I can clean this process up so that it doesn't use so much memory?

Thanks!

Your logs do not indicate any malware or infection, as your system is slow to boot etc lets try a start in "Clean Boot" mode..... Basically all non MS services are disabled, when disabling those services please make sure that any related to security or internet are left active...

Go to this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/929135 expand and follow the instructions for Windows 7.

If the clean boot fixes the issue do the following:

Repeat as previously to disable non ms services, ensure all MS services are hidden, enable half of the non MS services then re-boot. If the issue does not return do exactly the same again, this time only enable the bottom half of non MS services.

If the issue returns we know the issue is in the bottom half, so you now repeat again but only enable half of the bottom half. Keep doing that until you isolate the rogue sevice.

Let me know how you get on, I know it is a laborious task but it will locate the issue. Obviously if the issue happens with the initial clean boot we`ll have to think again....

To return your computer to a Normal startup mode when complete, follow these steps:

  • Open msconfig...
  • On the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
  • When you are prompted, click Restart.

Thanks,

Kevin...

Well, I am having a hard time pinpointing the service that caused the problem, but the memory usage just goes steadily up as I add services and restart. With them all running, the computer runs slower, and with none running, the computer runs better. Are there any of these services that I don't need at all? I don't notice any difference in the way the computer runs besides the performance. Thanks for your time!

the first log you asked for is caption, location, command.txt. The second log is tasklist.txt. The third log you asked for is tasklist svc.txt.

I use IHeartRadio to stream music, and it is interrupted and stops playing sometimes. I think this is another result of whatever is slowing the rest of the computer down.

caption, location, command.txt

tasklist svc.txt

tasklist.txt

I do not recall that streaming music through iHeartRadio was mentioned as an issue, as far as malware/infection I do not see anything wrong...

iHeartRadio has a website that maybe helpful to you, have a read at the following link:

http://help.iheart.com/customer/portal/articles/206952-troubleshooting-browser-issues-with-iheartradio

To clean up run the following;

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

Remove disinfection tools

Purge System Restore <--- this will remove all previous restore points and create a fresh point relative to system status at present.

Reset system settings

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…

Next,

Read the following link to fully understand PC security and best practices, you may find it useful....
