Unknown Malware Preventing Installation and Chameleon

Recommended Posts

I have a laptop that I use sparingly for school and leisure. It runs on Windows 7 and has never given me any problems, really, other than being unable to play videogames. It suffices for email, internet, and schoolwork, so that is enough for me.

However, one thing led to another, and recently after trying every tactic I can think of in my limited knowledge of the IT industry, I have come to the conclusion that my recent sufferings in memory usage, freezing during web use, and overall cpu performance are a result of some undetectable form of malware.

After scouring the web for advice on how to proceed next, I decided to try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, due to its many recommendations. Unfortunately, I have run into problems doing so.

Specifically, I can get no further than downloading the installer and running it. When I get past the intial confirmation and set up windows, the installation hangs when the installation progress bar appears and displays an error message that reads:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Chameleon\Windows\mbam-chameleon.com

An error occured while trying to read the source file: Access is denied.

Click Retry to try again, Ignore to skip this file (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation."

This event only confirmed my suspicions that something must be deeply wrong with my laptop, and I now sadly view it as a child with the T-virus, waiting for me to lower my guard at the right moment to strike...

I have tried the various workarounds known, like installing MB-AM on a clean PC and transferring the Chameleon folder via a USB flashdrive. In this case whatever is preventing the installation would also not let me paste the Chameleon folder onto my desktop or anywhere else. I tried running it from the flashdrive directly but non of the 13 Chameleons worked, they all marked "Tested" and had no results.

I even tried manually downloading the MB-AM installer as a renamed file under a different extension, but this unseen force cannot be swayed and continues to deny my attempts and hold me hostage to its performance robbing ways.

I have also installed SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition under the portable version and was able to run this successfully. However, despite removing over 131 different types of adware during a 25 minute long full-scan, it returned nothing else.

All other attempts so far have proved futile, and I suspect the worst, a rootkit.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, otherwise my next logical step would be to try installing Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit.

(attached is a screenshot of the infamous rejection screen I keep getting)

Thank you

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll try to help your with your issue.

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • We're primarily oriented on malware removal here, so you must know that some issues just cannot be solved and you must be prepared for this. Some tools we use here will remove your browser search history, so backup your important links and all the files whose loss is unacceptable.
  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time. Keep in mind that private life gets in the way too. Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a More reply options button, that gives you Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.
  • Always execute my instructions in given order. If for some reason you cannot completely follow one instruction, inform me about that.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

:excl: I can't foresee everything, so if anything not covered in my instructions happens, please stop and inform me!
:excl: There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!

  warning.gif Rules and policies

We won't support any piracy.
That being told, if any evidence of illegal OS, software, cracks/keygens or any other will be revealed, any further assistance will be suspended. If you are aware that there is this kind of stuff on your machine, remove it before proceeding!
The same applies to any use of P2P software: uTorrent, BitTorrent, Vuze, Kazaa, Ares... We don't provide any help for P2P, except for their removal. All P2P software has to be uninstalled or at least fully disabled before proceeding!

Failure to follow these guidelines will result with closing your topic and withdrawning any assistance.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Hello, TwinEagle, and thank you for responding to my post.

I have attached the two logs requested to this post, and will await further orders.

(As a funny aside, I was secretly thinking of requesting you as my helper after seeing some of your previous work, but thought against it since any help would have been better than no help.....    but it looks like lady luck is so far on my side. :) )

Hello again, TwinEagle!

I was able to perform the following steps successfully:

-Uninstall some programs

-Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

-Fix with AdwCleaner

-Uninstall outdated Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

The final step (-Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) was unsuccessful.

I followed your instructions exactly, but unfortunately I ran into the same issue. Malwarebytes Anit-Malware would halt the installation whenever the progress bar reached the Chameleon folder.

I have attached the logs that were requested to this post, along with another screenshot of what happened.

To my great surprise, Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit returned no infections or results.

Even though I should be happy to receive such good news, I am a little embarassed now.....

I wonder what the issue with installing Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is now?

I am using the only account on this laptop, with full administrator privileges, so I don't understand why I keep receiving the "Access is denied." error message?

Let's use FRST again:

FRST.gif Scan with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Please re-run Farbar Recovery Scan Tool to give me a fresh look at your system.

  • Right-click on FRST.gif icon and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Make sure that Addition option is checked.
  • Press Scan button and wait.
  • The tool will produce two logfiles on your desktop: FRST.txt and Addition.txt.

Please upload them into your next reply.

Hey, Twin Eagle!

....sorry about the absence. I had a few things catch up with me out here, but I'm back now.

I went a step further and completely uninstalled AVG, since it was a two year old version and the trial had long since expired.

I remember trying to disable it before, but that still prevented the installation.

Once I completely uninstalled it, however, it was a different story.

I ran the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installer and... SUCCESS!! :D

I ran a full scan and it returned no results or suspicious activity.

You have no idea how happy I was to know that my computer is malware and root-kit free.

My computer still suffers from high cpu and memory usage during web browsing, but I see now that it has nothing to do with malware.

I'll do a little more research elsewhere and see what I can find.

Thank you very much for your help. :)

  • Make sure that these ones are checked:
    • Remove disinfection tools
    • Purge system restore
