Turn your Boeing 787 off and on again, or it will crash

I was watching one of the Air Crash Investigation documentaries the other day about Dreamliners and a near fatal crash due to an engine over reving and exploding. The damage led to severe difficulty flying the aircraft and around 100 in cockpit warning alerts which had to be handled one by one due to the complexity of the flight management system. Luckily the aircraft was able to land safely (only just) as it would not have been able to make another pass. It appeared to have 3 pilots and 2 engineers within the cockpit for that long haul flight from Singapore.

I guess that the more complex these aricraft become, the higher chance of failures and crashes. :(

Just had a quick google on just this topic and the results were full of safety problems regarding the Boeing 787.

Sorry I'm a little late to this party...

Isn't this a bit ridiculous, considering commercial planes need basic maintenance every 250 flight-hours (not days), which I suppose means the *ignition will be turned off*. And more intense maintenance done every 6 months. So, to have a plane *switched on* for 248 days, you would be either a) operating in utter illegality or, b) be some kind of... a total moron ;)

But I understand this is about airplanes so you have to cover everything I suppose.

Boeing needs this plane to do well, so let's hope they get all the kinks out soon.

yer safer flying than crossing the street ...

that said , a friend and i went flying during a chinook in february ... three glorious days of 50 degree weather and then back to -10F to -25F .

we came in for a landing ... the approach was text book ...

when we were about 30 feet off the ground and 150 feet shy of the runway suddenly it was like a big hand was pushing down on the plane .

yessir ... put it down in the snow and grass about 50 feet from the tarmac , barely missed the end approach marker lights and then finished up on the runway ... centered !

i didn't even have to reach for the pry-bar to get loose from the seat .

Was that a sudden tailwind, CWB ? Sounds like fun !!

Folks who aren't crazy about flying should definitely stay away from all the wonderful near-crash vids on YT. The crosswind landing ones are a hoot.

My brother did a few stalls + spins for me in a Cesna 172 some years back. Couldn't find a vid for a 172, but found one for a smaller 152 (watch for the second stall @0:50) :

Better than any rollercoaster ;)

Well, I've never flown and hopefully won't ever have to... har har....

I am very careful when crossing the street, but I suppose you never know....

Yikes!  That's a scary experience CWB!

no tailwind ... it was either a density change or a down-draft .

there was a steady 5 MPH crosswind (the sock was pretty limp) .

the plane is a cessna 310 (not sure what issue) ... it is named "spirit of sky king" (after the tv series) .

the military equivalent is/was a T-50 ... or at least very close .

and now ... back to your regularly scheduled thread
