Intermittent Network Disconnects Windows 8.1

It's a nuisance and it slows down the system, but periodically windows 8.1 with an ethernet connection may pause and show a red X in the internet icon.  It's a tricky problem because uninstalling and reinstalling elements like the Realtek Family Controller doesn't fix it.  (Pardon my lack of specificity; my technical vocabulary is limited.)

 

I -- and many others -- have tried about every trick in the book.  Finally I've found one suggestion on another forum that seems to work.  Open internet connection, go to ethernet, properties, configure, and change the value of the entry that looks like speed/duplex.  Any change will work.
