Firefox files in Malwarebytes scan

Recommended Posts

Just ran a Malwarebytes scan and it detected these two files. Before I quarantine these two I thought I'd ask your opinion. Both are Firefox files, and the last I quarantined something like them I lost all my Firefox customizations. Do these two look suspicious to you?

Files: 2

PUP.Optional.Trovi.A, C:\Users\John C Sproul\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9724fpi9.default\prefs.js, Good: (), Bad: (user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://www.trovi.com/?gd=&ctid=CT3322288&octid=EB_ORIGINAL_CTID&ISID=MDB29B4D8-31C9-4A7F-B708-29D463BD9CF6&SearchSource=55&CUI=&UM=8&UP=SPF37A687E-26F8-4C4B-B237-8C94774EA859&SSPV=");), ,[7d8822fa583280b679355c967f869c64]

PUP.Optional.Trovi.A, C:\Users\John C Sproul\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9724fpi9.default\prefs.js, Good: (), Bad: (user_pref("browser.newtab.url", "http://www.trovi.com/?gd=&ctid=CT3322288&octid=EB_ORIGINAL_CTID&ISID=MDB29B4D8-31C9-4A7F-B708-29D463BD9CF6&SearchSource=69&CUI=&SSPV=&Lay=1&UM=8&UP=SPF37A687E-26F8-4C4B-B237-8C94774EA859");), ,[45c0120aaae0c96dd3dceb0795701ce4]

If these are both OK, if I check "Ignore" on the results page, will that prevent them from showing up on future scans?

I don't recommend you ignoring those. They appear to be browser hijacks. One for new tab and the other for home page. I recommend changing the home page to about:blank and new tab page to about:newtab.

The safest way is to reset firefox profile to default in order to remove these hijacks. Make sure you backup bookmarks, extensions settings and digital certificates if apply.

Also, make sure you got rid of the browser hijacker. You may want to wait for a more professional member to reply.

Hello johnsproul:

Since your post indicates your system is infected and malware removal actions are not permitted in this sub-forum, I recommend following the advice from the topic: Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and have one of the Malware Removal Experts assist you with your issue.

If, as recommended, you do open a topic in Malware Removal Help, please make reference to this thread.

If you would like to get off to a very fast start, the Malware Removal Experts would appreciate it if you would also Copy and Paste (not attach) both the FRST.txt and the Addition.txt output diagnostic reports from only Log Set 1 into your new topic.

Thank you. :)
