MBAM 2.0.4.1028 STILL hanging on "Pre-Scan Operations"

Recommended Posts

Like the title says...

MBAM simply refuses to play nice with my main XP installation.

Using Threat Scan or Custom Scan matters not, 80% of the time MBAM hangs up after 2 minutes of "Pre-Scan Operations" and the only way to stop it is to hit the power button.

Sure, it lets me Stop or Cancel the scan, but it leaves a ~240Mb chunk of memory in my task manager that can't be cancelled  or killed.  Not by Windows Task Manager, not by Process Explorer.  And if I try to restart MBAM... nothing happens.    A hard power down and reboot is the only way to free that memory and get MBAM to start (and hang) again.

I have scoured this forum and tried EVERY solution.   MBAM cleaner app.  Reinstall.   Repeat.

Run with archive scanning turned on or off... doesn't matter... MBAM STILL HANGS at PSO.

Rootkit scanning on or off... MBAM STILL hangs at PSO.

The only time MBAM will run with all features enabled to completion without freezing is immediately after the reboot it takes to kill the last hung-session.   And it never finds a thing.   Run it 2 days later -- hangs at PSO.

I've used every other reputable stand-alone AV/Malware cleaner I can find to see if they can find anything.   Nope.

I've tried (apparently unsuccessfully) to scrub this unit of every possible culprit: Old printer & scanner drivers.  Leftovers from old installs.   Still hangs.   Set exceptions to AV, printer & scanner folders.   No good.

Point of interest 1:  MBAM runs fine (rootkit/archive scanning = ON) in Windows safe mode.

Point of interset 2: MBAM runs perfectly fine on 2 other similarly kitted systems.   Same OS, same memory, same AV. Those units have never once experienced this PSO hang.

Point of interest 3: MBAM's Beta Rootkit Scanner  1.07.1009  runs like a top.   Never a problem.

I also run Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit and AVG.   Running MBAM with either of both of these on or off matters not.

Pre-scan operations is as far as MBAM gets.   And I'ts geting pretty freaking frustrating.

There must be SOMETHING that MBAM can't wrap its' head around, but I'm all out of ideas.  What am I missing here?

Anyone still having this problem?   (Of course you are, what am I saying...)

Hello and :welcome: :

Let's start with some basic troubleshooting -- even if you have reinstalled before, performing a proper "clean" reinstall will give us a known, good starting point for additional investigation:

  • Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  • If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and attach to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)
  • NOTE: There is an FAQ section with valuable information located here - Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions

Thanks,

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello daledoc1!

Did clean removal & clean reinstall per request.

I ran MBAM daily (most days) in both Threat and Custom (full C: drive) modes.   Had 7 successful scans in a row (although it seems to almost SKIP through System Drivers thru Physical Sectors), and I thought the newest install had finally "taken".

Wrong.

Run # 8.  Custom scan of full C: drive.   Rootkit scanning on.   Hung up at Pre-Scan Operations, just like a hundred times before.

Requested logs attached.

The logs indicate the computer may be infected or damaged from an infection.

Please follow the directions below and post the same logs in your new topic.

I would suggest following the advice from the topic here Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and having one of the Experts assist you with looking into your issue.

Thanks
