Mbam is running - but nothing happens

Recommended Posts

I tried to run it yesterday and I get a standard message to allow it to run, then it appears in task manager, but nothing happens.  I downloaded and reinstalled 2.0.4 - same thing.

Today I followed the instructions in  https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/146017-mbam-clean-removal-process-2x/for removal.

Downloaded and installed 2.0.3.125 - it did not offer to update. Same thing, it's in Task Manager, but appears to be doing nothing.

FWIW If you "downloaded and installed 2.0.3.1025", then you didn't actually follow the instructions here: MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x :(

That pinned topic explains the best practices for a proper *clean* install of the current version, 2.0.4.1028.

It would probably be a good idea either to follow the process that was suggested, or to post the 3 requested Diagnostic Logs (attached to your next reply here), as Firefox suggested.

Doing so will greatly aid our ability to better assist you. :)

But it's up to you.

Thank you,

RE:  then you didn't actually follow the instructions here -- That is what I followed - and that points to a download for 1.0.3.1025- I assumed that was an intentional link to an older version - especially when it says "Please make sure you check for updates at the end of the installation as well."

I think that the OP might have followed the link to the changelog for an earlier version (2.0.3.1025), posted in this topic >>here<< (screen shot 1 below)?

One needs to scroll down in that post for the actual instructions for the clean reinstall of the current version, 2.0.4.1028, lower down (screen shot 2 below).

MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x

It looks more complicated than it is.

It may help to print out the instructions before proceeding.

I traced back and the link from that page that I used -  http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

gets redirected to http://malwarebytes-anti-malware.en.softonic.com/download?ptn=malwarebytes [using firefox,in IE, it's not]

http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbam_cleanseems  safe

I suspect I've been hijacked - I found some kind of minor virus several weeks ok associated with en.softonic.com and I thought it was removed

and while I was typing this Malwarebytes popped up and wanted to update the Databases - and I"m not doing that - I'm uninstalling from scratch

After many hours of messing around - I was unable to remove the Softonic hijack from FIreFox - I used http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-softonic-web-search/- but most of what it says e.g. addons do not apply as they do not exist.

AdwCleaner runs - and removed many unrelated issues.  Junkware Removal Tool ran for an hour and did not complete.HitmanPro found nothing.

I followed the uninstall/reinstall using downloads from Malwarebytes and it appeared in task manager with an Icon at the bottom of the screen that does nothing. I left the computer on overnight and in the morning a Malware bytes screen was active- I scanned for about an hour and it only found quarantine.exe- no Softonic issues.   On the bottom right I have a mini-window saying Protection disabled - one or more components of protection are disabled. I ended up buying a license but it still warns [on the main window] "Malicious website Protectifon disabled" - it is not possible to turn that option on clicking the selection immediately reverts.

I tried to download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool- but Norton says its a virus and deletes the download.

Also I checked my notes and in early January Malwarebytes found PUP.Optional.Softonic A, and I think HitmanPro also found something.  - As far as I can reconstruct this is from downloading an eBook reader from Softonic 1.25 years ago and failing to uncheck an option.
