Guys, looking for a little advice.

Just bought a new computer the other day and was downloading JetVideo off Cnet.  The download was about 25meg and the download stopped at 25 meg and refused to finish.  Then the computer shut off on its own and restarted. I then went on to Yutube to watch a video.  The video would download fine, but then the portion it downloaded ahead would get all sucked up.  You could see the download bar go from almost full to nothing....as though the RAM would get gobbled up every 30 seconds or so and stop the video from moving forward.

i then opened up my task manager and saw something called "program" in the startup items with no publisher listed.  It was NOT there earlier today.

I then got a bit annoyed and am in the process of a very long system restore...which I know was probably the wrong thing to do....if I indeed downloaded a virus from CNET.

If I can get back up ( the restore has been going for 45 minutes)...what would you recommend I do from there?  Melete all restore points and run Malware Bytes?  ADWCleaner maybe as well?  Windows defender too?  Recover original factory settings from my D Drive and hope it did not spread to that drive?

Thank god I have this little Linux Mint netbook on the side, lol.

Thanks for any advice.

Tj

Hello and welcome!

I'm Radek and I'll try to help you with your issue.

Before we start please note the following:

  • Analysis and research take some time, also sometimes real life gets in the way, please be patient.
  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work harder and more complicated.
  • Stay with me to the end, the absence of symtoms doesn't mean that your machine is fully operational.
  • Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
I can't foresee everything, so if anything unexpected happens, please stop and inform me!

There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!
