Hi, my laptop hp pavillion g6 crashed to the point I couldn't boot in safe mode last night and today I took it in for repair and recovery, the guy repaired it..(I did not have the recovery disc and it was asking for that, I told the guy that but he said recovery would wipe my laptop back to factory settings, not sure if thats true) that is it now boots but I had to run a recovery when I got home but managed to get into my laptop, but the AVG he put on for me was wiped and I cannot use the wifi or the touchpad scrolling function so this made me think that drivers are missing?

I don't honestly know if you need a driver for wifi as it came working with my wifi out of the box three years ago.

So basically I am looking for a bit of help. Do I need drivers for things like wifi and the touch pad? If so where are they as I know very little about computers. I know my laptop probably has a hard drive issue so is not long for the world but if I can put of getting a new one by just downloading a few missing pieces that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

As for your computer issues, the short answer is: Yes, all hardware requires drivers.

Typically a set of drivers will come pre-installed with a brand-name (aka "OEM") computer, such as HP or Dell or Compaq.

A "factory restore" or "factory reimage" performed by the computer repair person likely set the system back to those pre-installed drivers.

(A reformat and Windows reinstall may have only loaded the basic drivers that come with pre-installed with Windows, rather than the HP factory drivers.)

Drivers are updated from time to time.

Users need not necessarily update them, unless there are problems.

If you are having problems after the repairs, it could be the result of drivers (or it could be another problem, e.g. with hardware or Windows).

For an HP computer, the best way to update drivers would be to visit the HP support site, specifically the "drivers and downloads" page, then enter the "service tag" or similar UNIQUE identification number HP has assigned to your specific computer.  The site will then typically provide a list of available drivers for that make and model.

The other, more expert forum members will undoubtedly correct me if I am wrong, and/or offer additional advice.

Thanks,

Thanks.

I found the page and my number, first I let hp's site try to "find" my laptop and give me the page for the correct down loads but it said it couldn't, so I put it in manually, chose what I am pretty sure is the correct lot of drivers for my machine and they failed saying not the correct machine so I am not sure now what to do.

I am pretty sure I picked the correct ones and he wiped my laptop of everything Hewlitt Packard, nothing remains of HP at all that I can search for so maybe he removed every trace of them? Things like flash for youtube isn't on its some HTML5 thing I think.

Well, something doesn't make sense about all of this. :(

Most OEM ("brand name") computers -- like Dell, HP, Compaq, etc -- have a "hidden" recovery partition that includes the Windows OS and the drivers that were installed at the respective factory.  It's a sort of backup that can be used in extreme cases to set the computer back to the way it was on the day it shipped from the factory.

IFFF the repair guy did a true "factory image" using that hidden partition, then the computer today would be "the same" as the day it left the HP factory.

Perhaps he actually deleted all the disk partitions, reformatted and reinstalled Windows without all the HP drivers, especially if you did not have the OS and drivers disks that came with the laptop?

>>>If you are getting error messages when you try to search for drivers at the HP site, then something must be amiss.

>>>I'll need to defer to the more expert forum members to help you with this.  They will likely need you to run some special diagnostics.

>>>For starters, though, to help them to help you, I suggest that please do the following:

  1. Tell us the exact make and model, with more detail than "hp pavillion g6", if possible, as well as the approximate date of purchase.
  2. AND, please run the diagnostic scanner (FRST) for log set #1 here:  Diagnostic Logs and ATTACH both logs to your next reply in this thread.

Thank you,

I get the error when trying to instal the drivers that I have downloaded. I do think he just wiped everything, He said he would after he recovered pictures and a few documents.

I bought it about three years ago around sept then. its a HP Pavillion g6 series 584037-001 (the number of the windows sticker refering to hp)

I will run and post the logs tomorrow if thats ok.

Thanks for your help.

"Perhaps he actually deleted all the disk partitions, reformatted and reinstalled Windows without all the HP drivers, especially if you did not have the OS and drivers disks that came with the laptop?"

as i see it , the guy might have performed a re-installation of the OS using a method that is kind of controversial  to/in/by these forums and the TOC ...

leave it suffice to say that it does not require the use of the OS as found on a set of factory discs .

however , the method does not restore/install any of the drivers specific to HP or other vendors (such as intel's rapid storage drivers) ... think "bare bones" .

if the OP paid good money in good faith to have (and this part is very important) his machine restored to "factory" then the guy that worked on it fell very short of the mark/agreement .

if this is the case , then returning the machine to the guy and having him install the necessary drivers (etc) to truly bring it back to "factory fresh" is warranted .

It crashed so bad it was booting in a loop when I pressed any option to try to restore so I had to take it to get repaired but I took it to one of those shops that sells all kinds of things for moblies like covers and screen repairs and does basic pc fixes ie its not a dedicaded repair shop which seems like it was my mistake taking it there.

I can't see the point in taking it back to him as he told me he was wiping everything after recovering my pictures and docs as it was so broken, and that it would be as new as he put it so I don't think he would be able to put drivers on it any more than I seem to.

I was just grateful to have my machine back up and running to be honest.

I think this might be one of those hard lessons to learn for 60 pounds.

Or can I not just restore it myselt if the partition is still there?

hmmm ...

"as new" is open for debate ... it could be construed two ways :

"new" as in factory fresh , right out of the box

"new" as in new OS (only) install

additionally : "... I told the guy that but he said recovery would wipe my laptop back to factory settings ..."

personally speaking ... if you were under the impression that he was going to do the work needed to bring the machine back to an "out of the box" state , i would go back and ask for a refund .

yes , you can go to HP and download what is needed .

some things are not really needed (such as any bloatware) ... things like the wifi driver are ok to install (there may be two packages for this item) .

certain drivers and hardware are "vendor/manufacturer specific" ... the drivers for a particular piece of hardware are "customized" for use by a given vendor and require the "proprietary" drivers .

generic or drivers from other vendors/manufactures (most likely) will not work .

think of it along the lines of not being able to swap the lug nuts from one brand/model of automobile over to another brand/make .

you said your laptop is a G6 ... what are the full set of numbers on the machine ?

i believe that HP as a piece of software that can be allowed to run (from the hp site) that will "look" at your machine and find the correct model/drivers .
