To save a click, "I've had malware issues.  Even got my credit card hijacked shopping online.  I have the free version of malwarebytes anti-malware software and I use AVG anti-virus.  I use google chrome browser.  I've been trying to run a java update for awhile now. My version is still 7 something.  After checking all over the java forums I was advised to use the "offline" installer.  No go.  I ran a scan with malwarebytes and found 3 new nasties, but no java installer will update my old version of Java.  Checking with the Google chrome forums I also find no help.  Only suggestions that something nasty is preventing me from updating java.  The reasoning is, this nasty has an exploit in the old version of java so part of what it does is prevent you from updating it.

So to the question.  I've cleaned up everything that AVG or Malwarebytes finds, reboot, try again, and nothing.  Something is blocking me from updating Java.  Any help or ideas?"

I've attached the log, I have deleted all the items in quarantine and still no go.

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • At the top of your post, please click on the "Watch thread" button and make sure to check Watch this thread...and receive email notifications. This will send an email to you as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing me to solve your problem faster.
  • Please do not install any new software during the cleaning process other than the tools I provide for you. This can hinder the cleaning process. Please do not perform System Restore or any other restore.
  • Instructions I give to you are very simple and made for complete beginner to follow. That's why you need to read through my instructions carefully and completely before executing them.
  • Please do not run any tools other than the ones I ask you to, when I ask you to. Some of these tools can be very dangerous if used improperly. Also, if you use a tool that I have not requested you use, it can cause false positives, thereby delaying the complete cleaning of your machine.
  • All tools we use here are completely clean and do not contain any malware. If your antivirus detects them as malicious, please disable your antivirus and then continue.
  • If during the process you run across anything that is not in my instructions, please stop and ask. If any tool is running too much time (few hours), please stop and inform me.
  • I visit forum several times at day, making sure to respond to everyone's topic as fast as possible. But bear in mind that I have private life like everyone and I cannot be here 24/7. So please be patient with me. Also, some infections require less, and some more time to be removed completely, so bear this in mind and be patient.
  • Please stay with me until the end of all steps and procedures and I declare your system clean. Just because there is a lack of symptoms does not indicate a clean machine. If you solved your problem yourself, set aside two minutes to let me know.
  • Please attach all report using fjqb1h.png button below. Doing this, you make it easier for me to analyze and fix your problem.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay for the repair.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

FRST.gif Scan with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Sorry for the delay in reply!  There is a computer place in the building where I work.  It's run by a good guy and we did some work for him.  His place is mostly an internet cafe and he also deals in cell phones but he said he'd take a look at it for me and clean up my laptop for 40 bucks.  I don't get it back until tomorrow.  I asked about it before I left work tonight and he said he hasn't found anything.  So... not good.  As a bonus I got an email from comcast (I don't know if it's legit)  that said I was infected with a bot.  Some searching around suggests that it might be a legit email some suggest it's just a scare email trying to get people to buy their "fix" software.  I'll update tomorrow after I get the lappy back and report what was found in case anyone is following this thread because they are having the same issues.

Got my computer back last night.  The guy didn't charge me anything.  He says it's because everything he ran and tested came back clean.  I boot up this morning. Don't even open a web browser just start working in excel and dropbox for a work thing and AVG is having a fit about a trojan called poweliks.  I downloaded a removal tool from symantec, and killed that one.  Oh and I still can't update java.  I'm about to throw in the towel and restore from a backup I did on an external drive.  The problem is I( got the drive for my birthday in July so the backup is a bit aged.  What a PITA.
