My computer seems to have an infection that keeps coming back every time I quarantine it.  The infection is "pup.optional.browseCoupon.a".

I am running Malwarebytes Premium 2.0.4.1028, updated today.  I'm also running Avast Internet Security.

I have run the steps found here:
https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/9573-im-infected-what-do-i-do-now/

I have attached the logs from Farbar Recovery Scan Tool.

Any help you can provide with removing this infection would be greatly appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Laura

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a More reply options button, that gives you Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.
  • Always execute my instructions in given order. If for some reason you cannot completely follow one instruction, inform me about that.
  • Stay with me to the end, the absence of symptoms doesn't mean that your machine is fully operational.
  • Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

:excl: I can't foresee everything, so if anything unexpected happens, please stop and inform me!
:excl: There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!

In this case having more of them will not provide you with better protection - instead they may cause slowness, lock-ups and even mark another ones as harmful, leading to leave your system unstable and even damaged. Please choose only one from the listed below to stay with and uninstall the others:

  • PC Matic Super Shield
  • avast! Antivirus

Uninstallation procedure:

  • Press the WindowsKey.png + R on your keyboard at the same time. Type appwiz.cpl and click OK.
  • Search for each uninstalled entry, right-click it and select Uninstall.

This should be done until any other steps will be taken.

Hello TwinHeadedEagle,

Thanks so much for helping me get rid of this infection.  I will try to follow your instructions to the letter.

I have performed the following steps:
1. Uninstalled PC Matic Super Shield
2. Updated Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
3. Re-ran Threat Scan
Malwarebytes found the same 4 items.  I selected "Quarantine" for all of them and clicked "Apply Actions"
Confirmation message indicated "Finished cleaning items. View the log for more details."
I was not prompted to reboot, but am rebooting now anyway.

Attached is the latest Malwarebytes log.

Best Wishes,

Laura

Hello TwinHeadedEagle,

My computer still seems to be infected.

I ran another Malwarebytes scan, which showed the same 4 items detected.  I quarantined all and attached the log.

This is the persistent nature of the infection I described.  It comes back after repeated quarantine.

Thanks for your help!

Best Wishes,

Laura

TwinHeadedEagle,

After the last required reboot, the screen came up as black for a long time.  I don't know how long because I finally walked away and came back to it several hours later.  By then it was at the login screen.

Also, the regularly scheduled Malwarebytes scan ran over the weekend and came up with the same 4 items.

Thank You!

Laura

TwinHeadedEagle,

I performed the following steps:

- Run Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (run as admin)
    select "Addition" option

(Farbar performed an automatic update when I ran it, then closed before running the scan)
- Run Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (run as admin)
    select "Addition" option
forgot to rename the logs and they were overwritten by the subsequent scan
- Uninstall Google Chrome
- Reboot
- Reinstall Google Chrome
- Run Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (run as admin)
    select "Addition" option
- Run Malwarebytes scan - same 4 entries came up

I have attached the most recent logs from Farbar and from Malwarebytes.

Thank you for your continued help.

Best Wishes,

Laura

I do occasionally use the Google Analytics Debugger.  I didn't realize that the entries being reported by MalwareBytes are related to this plugin.

Seems weird that

(a) a legitimate plugin would come up on the MalwareBytes scan and

(b) a debugging plugin would include something like "pup.optional.browseCoupon.a".  Unless my definition of "coupon" and their definition is different.

Please let me know what I should do next.

Best Wishes,

Laura

TwinHeadedEagle,

Thanks so much for helping me root this out.  I'm relieved to know that it was a false positive and not an actual infection.

However, that leaves me wondering why my disk usage has frequently pegged at 100% for periods of time, regardless of whether I have Dropbox and/or Outlook running.  I know that's not strictly your domain though, so I will continue to troubleshoot that on my own.

One other quick question, which is also not specifically related to an infection but was uncovered in the Farbar logs.  I found many traces of Roboform mentioned in the logs.  I uninstalled Roboform a long time ago and I'm a little bit disturbed that there are still so many references to it.  Do you know how I can wipe out all traces of an unused program such as Roboform?

Again, I very much appreciate all your help.

Best Wishes,

Laura
