Removed trojan.agent.fsavxgen but still hijacking browser

Recommended Posts

Please help!  My browser is being hijacked.  I ran MBAM and it identified Trojan.agent.fsavxgen.  It was quarantined and I rebooted to finish the removal process.  My browser was still being hijacked, so I ran it again a couple of times, with no negative results.  After much reading, I realized I needed to do a rootkit scan, so I did that.  It didn't find the problem.  I'm not sure where to go next and could really use some help.

Here are the Farbar logs:

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a More reply options button, that gives you Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.
  • Always execute my instructions in given order. If for some reason you cannot completely follow one instruction, inform me about that.
  • Stay with me to the end, the absence of symptoms doesn't mean that your machine is fully operational.
  • Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

:excl: I can't foresee everything, so if anything unexpected happens, please stop and inform me!
:excl: There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!

warning.gif Multiple Resident Protection warning!

Always have one (and no more than one!) AntiVirus program! In this case having more of them will not provide you with better protection - instead they may cause slowness, lock-ups and even mark another ones as harmful, leading to leave your system unstable and even damaged. Please choose only one from the listed below to stay with and uninstall the others:

  • Ad-Aware Antivirus
  • Microsoft Security Essentials

Uninstallation procedure:

  • Press the WindowsKey.png + R on your keyboard at the same time. Type appwiz.cpl and click OK.
  • Search for each uninstalled entry, right-click it and select Uninstall.

This should be done until any other steps will be taken.

remove%20outdated.jpg Uninstall some programs

We need to uninstall some unwanted/unneeded programs.

  • Press the WindowsKey.png + R on your keyboard at the same time. Type appwiz.cpl and click OK.
  • Search there for each entry mentioned below, right-click the entry and click Uninstall one at a time

The list of programs to uninstall:

  • YAC(Yet Another Cleaner!)

After completing uninstalls, please manually reboot your machine!

Note: If you get the message like: An error occurred while trying to uninstall, just press Yes.

(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.

TwinHeadedEagle,

I actually removed both antivirus programs before you replied.  I got a little leery of the overkill situation I created.  When I read your post, I went ahead and re-installed AdAware, so that's the only Anti-Virus I have now.   I removed Microsoft Security Essentials and YAC.

I saved the file you provided to my desktop and ran FARBAR.  The log it created is attached.

Thanks,

Theresa

I ran the Farbar scan a couple of times last night.  It gets through the first scan just fine.  However, when it goes to do the "Addition" scan, it gets hung up on "Listing Installed Programs".  I ran it before I went to bed last night and it was still hung this morning.  I've attached the log from the scan that did complete.  Thank you!

We might be getting somewhere here.  AdwCleaner found nym1.ib.adnxs.com in the registry.  I Googled it and that's the name of a virus.  It's the first time I've seen that particular one.  I did some poking around, particularly on sites I noticed tended to get hijacked more often than others.  So far so good.  There's a beer or three in this for you in a day or two when I know I'm out of the water.  Your help is very much appreciated!

It happens on websites that, until recently, I never had a problem with. They're completely unrelated sites and the two I visit most often.

The first is my hometown newspaper's site: www.rep-am.com.  The second is related to World of Warcraft: www.wowhead.com.

Here's what happens:

I click a link on a site, say to a newspaper article, and it brings me to a shopping site.  This isn't what I'd expect when reading something like an obituary.  I hit the back arrow to go back to the link and click it again.  This time, it brings me correctly to where I want to be.  Same deal on the second site I mentioned.  It happened once or twice when clicking a link on bleepingcomputer.

I find it really distressing that none of the tools I've run, either independently or with your very appreciated assistance, have discovered what's wrong.
