I need help with my computer

Recommended Posts

Everyday I run Malwarebytes Premium first thing in the morning.  Yesterday, it would not start.  So, I ran Chameleon.  Chameleon couldn't get it going, either.  Next,  I went back to an earlier restore point (1-1-15).  That didn't help.  I uninstalled Malwarebytes Premium because I have a program disk.  It still wouldn't start.  After that, the day becomes a bit of a blur.  By trying various things and trial programs the situation would improve temporarily.  My main symptoms are extremely slow startup (20-25 minutes), Malwarebytes Premium, sometimes working, sometimes not, and my mouse pointer likes to mysteriously disappear only to eventually reappear.  It seems re-starts bring back the Malwarebytes and mouse issue.  Obviously, I need some help here and would appreciate anyway directed my way.

Also, I tried downloading FARBAR and Norton Internet Security blocked it, and referred to it as WS.Reputation.1.

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a More reply options button, that gives you Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.
  • Always execute my instructions in given order. If for some reason you cannot completely follow one instruction, inform me about that.
  • Stay with me to the end, the absence of symptoms doesn't mean that your machine is fully operational.
  • Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

:excl: I can't foresee everything, so if anything unexpected happens, please stop and inform me!
:excl: There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!

warning.gif Multiple Resident Protection warning!

Always have one (and no more than one!) AntiVirus program! In this case having more of them will not provide you with better protection - instead they may cause slowness, lock-ups and even mark another ones as harmful, leading to leave your system unstable and even damaged. Please choose only one from the listed below to stay with and uninstall the others:

  • AVG AntiVirus 2015
  • Norton Internet Security

Uninstallation procedure:

  • Press the WindowsKey.png + R on your keyboard at the same time. Type appwiz.cpl and click OK.
  • Search for each uninstalled entry, right-click it and select Uninstall.

This should be done until any other steps will be taken.

I will get on this pronto.  I can see myself giving up on AVG and Spybot, but never Norton.  The reason I have multiple security protection is due to a video interview I once saw with Malwarebytes CEO, who recommended multiple security protection because no program is capable of catching everything and different programs have different strengths.  I hope this isn't a game breaker, so to speak.

I will proceed with your additional instructions until I hear otherwise.

Multiple layers of protection is good to have, but never two of the same kind. You can have one Antivirus plus one Firewall plus one Antimalware, but never two of the same kind.

Start up is still long (20-25 minutes.) Mouse continues to not appear after startup,  then suddenly appears.  I'm trying to run Malwarebytes right now and it is hanging.  It seems like all these things are moving in slow motion or don't work at all at times.  Two days ago, my system was fine.

Twin:

Good morning!  I am currently in the chkdsk startup effort.

Other things I noticed with my system yesterday.  System sounds occur randomly.  I can't describe them, they sound normal, but seemingly occur for no activity-related reason.  Also, from time to time Lightroom 5 starts for no particular reason.  The "Lightroom thing", I think, happened twice yesterday.

I want to give you more detail on the startup.  I don't know exactly what the system is doing per screen, but maybe it means something to you.  I have an old Dell Studio XPS 435MT.  When turned on there is the Dell Logo and a bar beneath that fills with blue.  Normally, the blue fills about 40%, pauses, then fills quickly and moves on to the next screen.  Right now, it just stops at the 40% fill and takes some time to move to the next screen.  The next screen is black with a cursor and normally just flashes and is gone.  Now, it hangs and for several minutes I start at a black screen with flashing cursor.  When that clears I see th Windows logo and the little dots circle around.  It also goes slower than normal, but not a slow as the first two screens.  When I reach the password screen it acts pretty normal at that point.

One last thing:  I took a look at my BIOS last night.  I did not change anything; I was just looking.  The boot order didn't make sense to me because one of my external drives was the first boot device.  Next was the CD/DVD and third was my HDD.  Shouldn't the external drive be  the third boot device?
