Removed (part of?) Poweliks, can't get the rest?

Recommended Posts

Father comes to me with his PC. I install wireshark and immediately notice tons of requests to spam/ad sites running through. Shut down the internet, start investigating.

- Notice a process "explorer.exe" that was chewing through ram as soon as I turn Wifi on.

- Notice a bunch of randomly named processes running.

- In /appdata I notice that there was a bunch of files in folders like "emiesitelist" (the folders all started with emie). They contained fake google chrome. It was impossible to just delete because they were running so I deleted what I could, started renaming the remaining files and this let me delete them (and subsequently ended a bunch of fake processes in task manager).

Ran combofix. Noticed only one particularly interesting result from it (maybe there was more). A regkey, saying it was "Poweliks" - which it removed.

Evidently, I started snooping around some of the regkeys that I've found on various sites and noticed when I clicked on permissions, there was an "Unknown user" associated with the permissions. I removed the user from access when I saw it.

- Back to explorer.exe - I found the files it was using in /programdata. Booted into safemode and deleted them.

At this point, I figured I had mostly beat whatever this was. I was wrong. My father used his PC for a while and I came home to him saying he was re-infected. Proceeded to repeat the above tasks again. (this time it was run32dll that was fake). Installed autoruns - noticed under the Images tab that there was iexplorer.exe listed.

At this point, I have no idea what's going to fix it. I did notice that when I started internet explorer, it immediately created a new directories starting with "emie" in /appdata.

I've run a ton of different programs in an attempt to fix it. Nothing seems to be doing the trick. I'm guessing there is regkey that hasn't been found that's still activating/redownloading the payload
