The latest Java is 6 build 14 - as long as the old was removed there should not be an issue with updates. There was a minor update issue posted by Sun though for some users with older versions not being removed and the installer failing. If you do run into issues updating Java please let me know.

Download and Update Java Runtime

The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says jre-6u14-windows-i586.exe and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Uncheck the Toolbar button (unless you want the toolbar)
  • Reboot your computer

Once we are completely done then you should be able to do the SP3 install but I'd recommend a couple of things before doing it which we can discuss soon.

Let me know what your AV finds please.

Okay I would run a disk check to make sure there are no issues before doing the Windows XP SP3 update myself.

You may have corrupted files on your disk. Please try running the following.

First close ALL Applications as this routine will automatically restart your computer.

Click on START - RUN and copy / paste the following entry into the box and click OK

CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /F | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

If the CHKDSK does not run on reboot then it could be due to Security Software or even Video/Motherboard drivers that need updating.

Then I'd use the FULL download instead of the Online version from Windows UPDATE. In rare cases the online version misses some files it actually needs for the update and thus can't install them. Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package

After downloading the file I'd disable Anti-Virus and other Security software while doing the update and then when it's done re-enable all the security software including Anti-Virus so that they don't interfere with the update.

IT ALL WORKED!!!

The only thing I have left are several Microsoft updates and the Adobe Update - Would you suggest I go to 9.0 or stick with version 8 and update that?

I have learned more in this past week than I really wanted to, but it was all good information to have for the future!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP!!!

You're very welcome, glad it's working better again now. Tell your friends and family.

I would remove the 8.x Adobe Reader myself and go with the 9.1.1

Some people like some of the 3rd party PDF readers but I've often found them not as good as the original Adobe version with graphics.

Once you're done with the MS updates please take a look at the following.

Great, all looks good now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP

You should
Create a New Restore Point
to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.

Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.

Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point.

Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to
"roll-back"
to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is

:
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Programs
    >
    Accessories
    >
    System Tools
    and click "
    System Restore
    ".
  • If the shortcut is missing you can also click on
    START
    >
    RUN
    > and type in
    %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
    and click OK

  • Choose the radio button marked "
    Create a Restore Point
" on the first screen then click "
    Next
    ".

  • Give the new Restore Point a name, then click "
    Create
    ".

  • The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

  • Then use the
    Disk Cleanup
to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Run
    and type:
    Cleanmgr.exe

  • Select the drive where Windows is installed and click "
    Ok
". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.

  • Click the "
    More Options
" tab, then click the "
    Clean up
    " button under System Restore.

  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "
Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?
    "

  • Click
    Yes
    , then click Ok.

  • Click
    Yes
    again when prompted with "
Are you sure you want to perform these actions?
    "

  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

  • On the
    Disk Cleanup
    tab, if the
    System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores
entry is available remove them also.

  • These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them.
