cannot run nor remove Malware Bytes Premium

Recommended Posts

This is very odd. I ran a scheduled scan 48 hours ago on my Win 8.1 maching and all was fine - no infections. The pc has been switched off since then. Now the PC won't run Malwarebytes Premium at all and I also get an error code (see below). If I try and uninstal it, I get the same error code. Various suggestions by helpers elswhere on this Forum (running frst.exe, providing logs, trying to clean uninstal using mbam-clean etc) all result in the same error code.

it was suggested by one of the helpers that I post here and ask for help. i'm pretty competent with PCS, but this one has got me beat!

Error Code

0xc0000279

Big thanks!

Steve

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a More reply options button, that gives you Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.
  • Always execute my instructions in given order. If for some reason you cannot completely follow one instruction, inform me about that.
  • Stay with me to the end, the absence of symptoms doesn't mean that your machine is fully operational.
  • Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

:excl: I can't foresee everything, so if anything unexpected happens, please stop and inform me!
:excl: There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Hey TwinHeadedEagle

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate your help. I can see you have helped at least one other with an identical problem, so I know I'm in good hands.

MY PC is new and  asm very PC literate. The PC is currently infection-free (I ran various scans - including Malware Bytes - two days ago and the PC has been switched off since then.

Before I consider downlaoding the apps you suggested, I'd like to be clear about WHY I need to do this. Given that you helped out another member recently with an identical problem, perhaps you'll tell me what the solution was, as I feel that the problem I am experiencing is nothing to do with an infection - more a problem with Malware Bytes itself.

What was the conclusion to other where they had an identical problem?

I had already tried to run FRST (haivng read your excellence guidance elsehere here), but Windows reported it was unsafe to run this, so I didn't.

Any comments before we decide what to do next?

Again, thanks for your help with this

Hi. i agree that every situation is different, but just as time-saver, what solution did you offer to the other user with the same problem?

As I mentioned previousy, the c is not infected, I suspect it's an issue with malware Bytes itself.

It seems counter-intuitive to run an app where the OS is saying it's unsafe to do so. :)

Thanks

Steve

Yes, and this is not security issue, but the fact that this tool isn't digitally signed (what costs some money). Of course Unsafe warning is mostly there because unsigned product is sometimes suspicious and it need to be checked. FRST tool helped diagnose problems not for hundreds, but for millions of people around the world. All tools we use here are perfectly safe to use no matter what Microsoft, Norton or any other company says about it.

This subforum is dedicated to help users remove malware from their machines. If they recommended you to open your topic here, then we should check your PC for possible infection and not only this, FRST shows many more important information that could help us fix your issue.

There are some signs of Adware, so we will perform FRST fix along with Adwcleaner tool. FRST fix will also empty all temporary folders and will empty your browsing history and cache. If you need to save something, now is the time to do it.

FRST.gif Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

icon_exclaim.gif This fix was created for this user for use on that particular machine. icon_exclaim.gif
icon_exclaim.gif Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable. icon_exclaim.gif

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

  • Right-click on FRST.gif icon and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please post it to your reply.

adwcleaner_new.png Fix with AdwCleaner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on adwcleaner_new.png icon and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Accept the Terms of use and click Scan.
  • When finished, please click Clean.
  • Upon completion, click Report. A log (AdwCleaner[s*].txt) will open.

Please include the contents of that file in your reply.

Note: Reports will be saved in your system partition, usually at C:\Adwcleaner

Thanks THE!

I'll do what you've suggested and get back to you.

I've also noticed that for some reason the Wndows Firewall cannot be started. I've tried enabling it, but it says that a 'dependancy' cannot be started. I'm not sure whether that's related to my issue or this is a new one! Anyway, thought I'd let you know. Will be in touch soon.

Cheers

Steve
