New version nagging

Recommended Posts

Hi!

So I installed your product in my mothers computer, now it bothers her constantly about upgrading to the new version.

Sh'e running 2.0.3.1025.

Also, I can't seem to make it not start at Windows boot? That seems to be an advanced feature available only in premium version?

Seriously? If I don't want it to start at boot I have to pay? Really??

I have to PAY to NOT run this program?

Sure I can take care of it with regedit but I shouldn't have to. Why is this program acting like malware?

Hello and welcome:

It is nagging to update because 2.0.3 is NOT the current program version.
The current program version is 2.0.4, with an important "fix".
So, it would be recommended to accept the program update that is being offered. :)
(You can either do it through the internal auto-updater, or you can cleanly upgrade to version 2.0.4, by following the steps HERE.)

As far as the settings, MBAM Free is ONLY a manual, on-demand scanner.
It does not run in real-time, does not provide real-time protection, and does not start with Windows.
You are correct -- "Advanced Settings" are available only to users of the Trial version or the paid, Premium version.

So, if the program is starting with Windows, I suspect that you may be running the Trial version that is enabled by default during installation, unless the user opts out. You can confirm this by opening the main dashboard and looking at the ribbon at the very top: it will say either "Free" or "Trial" or Premium".

If that is the case and you want to you want to revert to the Free version, there are 4 options, any of which will work:

  • Allow the trial to expire in 14 days;
  • Click the "End Trial" popup notification;
  • Click the "End Free Trial" link in the GUI;
  • Perform a clean reinstall, using the method described here: MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x - be sure to "opt out" (remove the check mark from) the Free trial, if it is offered again during the installation wizard.

ALSO, for additional information:
There is an FAQ Section here: Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions

I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

It was the trial version, then it was reverted to free.

I had no wish to upgrade, but... I did, as you forced me to.

Still it pops up asking me to scan and stuff, even though I removed its entry from \RunOnce with regedit.

I look again, and it's back in \RunOnce.

This is malware behaviour, and I've had enough. I expect better from an anti-malware product. Uninstalling.

Alas, "I" did not force you to do anything. :(

I am just a home user and forum volunteer trying to help.

Once MBAM Trial has ended, it goes back to the Free version.

It does not "force" you to upgrade - the decision to upgrade is 100% up to the user.

It's really quite simple to get back to the Free, manual, on-demand scanner version.

I presented 4 different ways to do that.

There is no need to edit the Registry -- doing so may well have corrupted something.

We are more than happy to try to help you to get back to where you want to be with the program.

However, we would need you to help us to help you by trying to follow the advice provided.

If that doesn't work, then we would need to see a bit of diagnostic information from the system, as we cannot know what is happening without that info.

If you would like help:

  • Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  • If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and attach to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)
  • NOTE: There is an FAQ section with valuable information located here - Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions

Thanks again,
