MBAM Wont Update

Recommended Posts

Over the past few months I have raised a thread or two based on MBAM not working and/ or failing to update itself. Well, I have the new version now  and it still stops working and it still has to be updated manually. Followed all of the instructions given in my other threads including the clean install.

Edit: My previous threads on the same subjects can be found here:

Where now??

Hello again:

Sorry to hear you are having updating problems again.

There is no way to know what is happening without some routine troubleshooting and data.

A couple of easy things to check:
>>First, please be sure your system date/time are correct.
>>Also, please check to be sure there are no "Detected Threats" that need to be dealt with first, as this can prevent the program from updating: Click the "Scan" button at the top of the dashboard and verify that there are no detected threats (especially PUPs or PUMs) awaiting your actions.

>>Then, please be sure that your AV and firewall both give MBAM full permissions. It's possible that your AV or firewall might be treating MBAM as a new program and may be blocking it -- the files that need to be excluded can be found HERE (just the one reply, not the entire thread). Please post back if you need help with that.

If those suggestions don't resolve your issue:

  • Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  • If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and post back attached to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)
  • NOTE: There is an FAQ section with valuable information located here - Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions

Please let us know how it goes.

Please be patient waiting for a reply -- today is the start of a long holiday weekend in the U.S., where many forum volunteers and MBAM staff members are based.

Thanks,

Hello again:

Sorry to hear you are having updating problems again.................they have never stopped! A family member is very ill at the moment, so the computer and it's problems have been on the back burner.

>>First, please be sure your system date/time are correct..............they are.

>> Click the "Scan" button at the top of the dashboard and verify that there are no detected threats (especially PUPs or PUMs) awaiting your actions..............couldn't see any sign of threats and ran a threat scan with a nil return result

Will continue following your instructions tomorrow.

Then, please be sure that your AV and firewall both give MBAM full permissions...............the exclusions were added to my AV when I got the new MBAM version.

Not sure where to find my firewall or even which type I have. Are there different ones?

Edit: Found the windows firewall and there is no sign of mbam in there. Would I add the same exclusions to windows firewall i.e.:

 C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe

That said, does my Avast also have a firewall?

Hi:

I am not personally familiar with Avast.
And we would need to know WHICH PRODUCT and WHICH VERSION in order to be able to refer you to the proper instructions for setting exclusions - some products have a firewall and/or HIPS features, and others do not, etc..

There could be many other reasons to explain the updating problem -- possible conflict with Avast is only one of them.

As such, in order to better assist you, and in the interest of efficiency, it would help to see some basic diagnostic logs from the system:

  1. Please read the following and attach to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)
  2. NOTE: If you have run FRST on this system before, please be sure to place a check-mark for the "Addition.txt" option before you run it.

Thank you,

Hi again daledoc. A window popped up saying that there was a new version of MBAM available. I went ahead with the download and for the first time in months my MBAM began to update automatically. Long may it continue. Thank you so much for your help while I was having these problems.  ;)
