Hello, my laptop has been running slowly for a while.  A couple of days ago, a got annoying popup videos in the lower right corner of Chrome.  Adblock blocked the video, but the popup still comes up.  I have very few plug ins and only a couple extensions, none of them related to anything that normal internet searching turned up.  I uninstalled/reinstalled browser, still there.  When I start the computer, a DOS command prompt window appears with the syswow64 extension.  My McAfee finds nothing and Malwarebytes found nothing as well.  I'm not really a computer geek, but I think I can make it though any instructions.

I need your help.  I read some other threads and I've started by running the FRST tools... attached are the FRST and additon logs.

Update on computer:

I went to the same websites where I had the video ads, none appeared.
I don't have the C: sysWOW64  command prompt when I start the computer.

I still have the multiple svchost.exe processes, but I'm assuming that's normal now.

The computer seems much faster opening programs, etc, but I don't do much with it other than browse the web.  It's not a workhorse or anything.  I hope that's descriptive enough.

Hello,

I still have the multiple svchost.exe processes, but I'm assuming that's normal now.

Yes, this is normal.

Lets update your vulnerable software to reduce the risk of reinfection.

STEP 1
CXrghb6.png Update Outdated Software

Outdated software contain security risks that must be patched. Please download and install the latest version of the programmes below.

  • iTeOzi7.png Adobe Air
  • j8JVMVP.jpg Java (watch out for "Optional Offers" or bundled software)
  • u9DsAVv.png Follow these instructions to check for and download the latest Windows Updates.
  • ehzOq95.png I recommend installing the latest version of Internet Explorer for added security. The latest version IE can be installed via Windows Update.

STEP 2
EtQetiM.png Remove Outdated Software

  • Press the Windows Key pdKOQKY.png + r on your keyboard at the same time. Type appwiz.cpl and click OK.
  • Search for the following programmes, right-click and click Uninstall one at a time.
  • Note: The programmes below may not be present. If this is the case, please skip to the next step.
    • Java 7 Update 21 (64-bit)
    • Java 7 Update 71
  • Follow the prompts, and reboot if necessary.

STEP 3
zANS9oB.png Disable Java in Your Browser
Due to frequent exploits we recommend you disable Java in your browser.
For information on Java vulnerabilities, please read the following article (point #7).

  • Click the 29Fou9c.jpg Windows Start Button  and type Java Control Panel (or javacpl) in the search bar.
  • Click on the Java Control Panel. Once opened, click the Security tab.
  • Deselect the check box for Enable Java content in the browser. This will disable the Java plug-in in the browser.
  • Click Apply. When the AVOiBNU.jpg Windows User Account Control (UAC) appears, allow permissions to make the changes.
  • Click OK in the Java Plug-in confirmation window.
  • Restart your browser(s) for changes to take effect.
  • More information can be found here and here.

STEP 4
oxliOQk.png Security Check

  • Please download SecurityCheck and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside the black box.
  • A log (checkup.txt) will automatically open on your Desktop.
  • Copy the contents of the log and paste in your next reply.

I think it's running fine.  IE updated to version 10; I thought the windows update was hanging but it eventually got done.  I'm assuming I had some sort of adware trojan?  What does Java do, why do I want to turn it off, but keep it updated to the latest version?  Thanks for being patient with me.

Hello,

I'm assuming I had some sort of adware trojan?

A mix of Trojans, Adware and Potentially Unwanted Programmes.

What does Java do, why do I want to turn it off, but keep it updated to the latest version?

Java is a programming language. If you do not use the programme, I suggest you uninstall it completely.
Here's some information on Java.

Using zANS9oB.png Java is an unnecessary security risk; especially using older versions which have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.

Java is one of those technologies that you find installed on the majority of computer systems despite the fact that average users do not come across many Java-powered websites or desktop applications [...] According to W3Techs, only four percent of websites use Java on the server side [...] it is used by 0.2 percent of all websites on the client side. And two tenths of a percent includes sites that do not use it for their core functionality [...] there are sites and applications that require Java, and if you use any of them, you obviously need Java. But that makes you a minority. The majority of Internet users do not need Java. They do not need the Java plugin, nor do they need the Java Runtime Environment installed on their operating system.

If you choose to keep Java installed, it is paramount you keep the software updated with the latest version.
You can verify/test your Java software installation & version here.
