Malwarebytes Malicious website fail

Hi,

I am unable to get Malicious website Protect in my premium version, can't even get the box to stay checked, it just bounces back from enabled to disabled. Also scan freezes which seemed to start about the time I changed PUP settings to Treat as Malware. The Heuiristic Scan freezes (3 times) at #78264 Detected Objects with PUP as Malware but does not seem to  freeze set at ignore.

Have tried uninstall, downloading clean version as outlined in the forum, rebooted 3 consecutive times after to no avail. Have noticed very sluggish performance in other programs along with almost chronic browser freeze for a week or two prior to this problem, if that tells you anything.

I'm going to try to paste the Unhide Text, then Farbar text. My computer skills are mediocre and I won't be offended if you spell things out. Thanks to any/all willing to help!

Hello Kevkev  :welcome:

Please always attach report files with your reply. Kindly do not copy and paste in the main reply box.

When starting a reply, look at the bottom-right of forum-topic-screen and click on the More Reply Options button.

You will then see "attach files" options {with paperclip icon) at the bottom left.

The default uploader allows you to upload attachments one at a time. To begin, press the BROWSE button. A box will appear for you to select the file on your computer that you want to attach. Select the file you want to upload.

If you change your mind, you can press the  Clear selection button and then choose a different file.

Once you have selected the file you want, press Attach this file.

If there are any errors uploading the file, you will receive an error message, otherwise, you will see the attachment appear.

For more directions, see also http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?app=core&module=help

Hello,

You skipped over a report that I need.

This tool will collect some information on the installation of Malwarebytes and create a report I need to review:

NOTE: You may need to temporarily turn off your antivirus if it interferes with this tool.

Download mbam-check.exe and save it to your desktop from http://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbam_check
On Vista/Windows 7, 8, Right-click on mbam-check-2.1.1.1001.exe & select Run as Administrator & allow to Run when prompted by User Account Control.
On XP,Double-click on mbam-check-2.1.1.1001.exe to run it.

Do have patience while the tool runs. It may take a while, and will flash a command prompt window. And then it will start your text editor ( default is typically NOTEPAD).

It should then open a log file CheckResults.txt. Just do a File >> Exit in NOTEPAD.
You should attach the CheckResults.txt file located on _**your desktop**_ so that I can review.

Please remind me, or rather, state explicitly for me ---- this pc is running Windows 7 or is it xp ?

There are conflicting reports.  mbam-check shows Windows XP Service Pack 2 Service Pack 2 64 bit Operating System

The FRST says Windows 7.

So tell me about that.

(B)

Lets give this a try:

Using Windows Explorer, go to this folder on your system C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Plugins
or it may be at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Plugins

You will see a Fixdamage.exe
Double click on it to start it to run.

It should run fairly quickly.

I would like for you to start the program.
Click on the Settings icon at the top bar up at top.
Then click the Advanced Settings button at the left.
Be sure all top 3 lines on that window are check-marked ( selected ).

Click the Settings icon >> then Detection and Protection
are the 2 protections on for Malware protection + Malicious website protection ?

Click whichever one is not "ON" slowly and wait just a bit. They typically will get going but require some patience.

Then too, sometimes after doing the above, you also need to do a Start >> Logoff >> Shutdown >> Restart.

Please let me know the results.

Part 2 ---- in addition --- and over and beyond the other reply, please also do this:

Download  >> Farbar's Service Scanner utility << and Save to your Desktop.
If using Windows 7 or 8 or  Vista, Right-Click on fss.exe and select Run As Administrator.
If using XP, double-click to start.

Answer Yes to ok when prompted.

If your firewall then puts out a prompt, again, allow it to run.

Once FSS is on-screen, be sure the following items are checkmarked:

  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center/Action Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender
  • Other services

Click on "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Copy & Paste contents of FSS.txt into your reply.

A. FRST is correct, WIN7. Around the time our computer began acting up, my wife told me our banking site identified us as using Xp also, strange as she uses the same bank for years. Ran Fixdamage.exe, it said problem fixed.

All Advanced Options boxes are checked except the bottom one "reduce priority..."

The Malicious Website Protection bullet will still not stay selected. I will reboot and begin part two

Ran the Farbar  Utility, attached log file and copy/paste of same.

Even after reboot MWP button will not stay darkened.

What you said about the bank showing XP instead of Windows 7 is significant when considered along with what the 2 reports showed here too.  Something may have happened on this computer about that time ---- such as perhaps one or another Windows service ( perhaps) not being around.

Can either of you remember --- IF any of you used and ran any sort of computer cleaner-wizard program ?
What sort of computer maintenance utility might have been used ?

At this time I need for a look see on Windows about Windows services.
a) Make sure if you opened any apps of yours, that you Exit them.

b) Be sure you are logged in with Admistrator rights account.

c) From Start button, select RUN  (or Win-key +R) and in the run-text-box type in
msconfig
and press OK or Enter.

d) You should see the General tab.  It should have **Normal startup** selected (in the radio-box=selection)
IF it does not, then you click on Normal startup.

e) Click on Services tab.  To get it's display of services.

Keep a written list of any changes from my list of services below. That way you and I have a reference document.

f) Look at the bottom line "Hide all Microsoft services"
IF and only IF its is checkmarked, then un-check it.

g) the list of servies may be shown in non-alphabetical order, so ....
Look at the heading titled "Service". Click on it as needed so the list is sorted and top of list starts with the "A" services.
You can toggle as needed to get the desired order.

IF any of below services are NOT shown, don't panic & do not stop, just write down the info for me and proceed with the others !

h) Then using the scroll-bar scroll down the list

Look for Base filtering engine service   Is it shown ?  Is it checked ?

Look for DNS Client service   Is it shown ?  Is it checked ?

Look for Ipsec Policy Agent.  Is it shown?  Is it checked?  If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator.  Is it shown ?  Is it checked? If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for RPC Endpoint Mapper.  Is it shown ?  Is it checked? If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

Look for Windows Firewall.  Is it shown ?  Is it checked? If not, click on that checkbox to checkmark.

When done, **press the Apply button, and the OK button**.

You're likely to be prompted to Restart Windows, **do so**.

**If not prompted, you do a Logoff and Restart of Windows.**

When finished, Exit  out of the services console.

NEXT
Look at the Anti-Malware program.
1. On the Dashboard click "Update now" to get the latest database version. If no joy, do the steps below.

2. Right click the Malwarebytes tray icon on the Taskbar and click "Exit"

mbam%20context%20menu.png

3. Restart the Malwarebytes application from the programs menu or desktop shortcut.
Take a new look at the Dashboard screen.
Does it have a green-color bar ?

Click the Settings icon >> then Detection and Protection
are the 2 protections on for Malware protection + Malicious website protection ?

Click whichever one is not "ON" just once, slowly and wait just a bit. They typically will get going but require some patience. Wait perhaps 30 seconds.

4. In most cases this resolves the issue on the Malicious Website protection, however if the issue still persists, reboot the computer and the issue should be resolved.

5. If the above procedures still do not correct the issue for you then please download the MBAM installer from the link below and reinstall the program which will fix the issue for you.

OK, Neither of us recall using any new cleanup or wizard program. I recently added free Adaware but after problems began.

PCboost was inadvertently on a few days ago untill I uninstalled it and it seems a V9 virus is hijacking my browser but that is in the same timeframe. The only type of cleaner/wizard we are likely to have used is one from windows already on computer. There has never been Win XP on this computer, only Win7.

A-C, done.

D- General tab had "selective start" tab with "load sys services" & "load startup items" checked. I clicked "normal start " per instructions.

E -done

F- "Hide all Microsoft services" was not checked, I did so

G- done

F- All items you listed were shown and checked

Next

1,2- done

3- no it's red, will not go "on"

3a- MWP is off, won't stay checked, after trying a red ! shows up on taskbar icon.

4,5- rebooted, new MBAM, problem remains, scan still freezes etc.

Our last resort ( if needed) would be a clean removal and new install.   But before we even go near that, advise me of some other things about the history of antivirus apps on this box.

You are showing now Lavasoft Ad-Aware Antivirus   ( looks to have been installed October 15 )

and also have some indications of Bitdefender

and some trace of PCDoctor

Switching from one antivirus is always a serious undertaking.  and one of the key steps would have been to be sure to have run a extra step to run the Remover utility for that product.

You see, very often, most antivirus apps will leave a leftover driver that would interfere with other security apps.

When did this last have Bitdefender?

What antivirus product initially came on this box from the factory?

Our next step will be to be sure to remove those no longer wanted.

Pretty sure I've tried a clean install as detailed in a pinned post on forum, glad to try again if it solves the problem.

I tried Lavasoft thinking it might catch something Malwarebytes missed, Oct. 15 would be around the time my computer began acting funny, slow, locking up even typing in Word etc. I have no objection to getting rid of it, or any others provided it does not leave the computer exposed to virus.

While downloading the Adaware tabs or boxes kept popping up, so unintentionally wound up with PCspeedboost, Bitdefender etc. Thought I had removed them.

I believe Norton or Mcafee came with the computer, I prefer your product based in part because the free version solved a problem on an older computer that one of those others couldn't. Again I am fine with removing anything, long as my protection is adequate.

A color change in screen container (border)  color might be form someone changing some settings in Control Panel.  Have you mad any recent changes?

Be very specific and explicit:  Which browser is your default browser on the system ?   which browser do you use most?

If you really think it is a "virus" then run the virus scanner in your Lavasoft.   That is what antivirus are for --- to check for viruses.

Run the scan and let me know the result.

NEXT:

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
For directions on how, see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=114351
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs
Do NOT turn off the firewall

Close all open browsers at this point.

Start Internet Explorer (fresh) by pressing Start  >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click and select Run As Administrator.
Using Internet Explorer browser only, go to ESET Online Scanner website:
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

Accept the Terms of Use and press Start button;

Approve the install of the required ActiveX Control, then follow on-screen instructions;

Enable (check) the Remove found threats option, and run the scan.

After the scan completes, the Details tab in the Results window will display what was found and removed. A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Eset\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Look at contents of this file using Notepad.

The Frequently Asked Questions for ESET Online Scanner can be viewed here
http://go.eset.com/us/online-scanner/faq

It is emphasized to temporarily disable any pc-resident {active} antivirus program prior to any on-line scan by any on-line scanner.
(And the prompt re-enabling when finished.)

If you use Firefox, you have to install IETab, an add-on.  This is to enable ActiveX support.
Do not use the system while the scan is running. Once the full scan is underway, go take a long break

Re-enable the antivirus program.

Hello,

The Eset online scan Log found nothing.  Is that what it told you onscreen too ?

That was a online scan ---- it is not permanent antivirus protection.   And if you uninstalled Adaware you will need to plan to get something else in place.

I would like for you to start the Anti-Malware program.

Click whichever one is not "ON" slowly and wait just a bit   ( 30 - 45 seconds or so ). They typically will get going but require some patience.

Then too, sometimes after doing the above, you also need to do a Start >> Logoff >> Shutdown >> Restart.

Please let me know the results.

I would like for you to run MBAM-check and send me a new Checkresults report.

  • Right-click on mbam-check-2.1.1.1001.exe & select Run as Administrator & allow to Run.

  • It should then open a log file CheckResults.txt
  • Please  attach the CheckResults.txt file located on your desktop into your reply here

Hi,

ESET found 15 "possible" issues, the onscreen list I could see (only partially visible) showed WIN32 files. Not sure why it doesn't show in the file log but can't find anything else, the Quarantine file is blank, there are some data files in a Module folder.

Thanks for the reminder I'll reload adaware.

Advanced Options has all but last box checked.

Malware Protection is checked, MWP as from the start, will not stay checked it immediately  bounces back to Disabled. Restart has no effect. Scan still freezes during Filesystem, after showing some 75000 objects.

At this point I'm wondering if others have this same problem?

Hello,

See if you can re-locate ( find) the log from the Eset scan and send ( attach) it for review.

A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\Eset\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

The Adware suite has a firewall component.  I'd like for you to do some research and see where in the firewall settings we can specify trust settings ( whitelist) for the Anti-Malware.  See if you can find a users guide.

Lets make a tweak in your settings for the auto-startup of the Anti-Malware. On Settings >> Advanced Settings.
Put a checkmark ( click ) for Delay protection at startup for 15 seconds

Apply and close the window. Logoff >> Shutdown >> Restart Windows for a new start.
Let me know the result.

After an update Malwarebytes now allows MWP checked and shows it as working.

The problem still remains that it freezes, Every time, even after updating and restarting, during the heuristic scan. It will show approc 79500 deleted objects during this portion of scan but then freezes, goes no further and closes. VERY frustrating at this point.

I copied C:\Program Files\Eset\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into the search programs/files box it shows no returns.

RE; Tweak-As i indicated in previous post, under Advanced Settings ALL boxes were/are checked save the bottom one.

Can check on Adware fireware but it is unclear what bearing this will have since I Uninstalled it prior to  MBAM/clean copy/ etc. as in previous posts.

Hi,

I do not quite understand this -->

It will show approc 79500 deleted objects

I can understand or "scanned".   But not "deleted".  And if it were "detected" that many as suspects then something is way way off.

I need to see the very last few logs for the day of the last run.

I need to see the Protection log named protection-log-2014-12-DD.xml in the corresponding folder.  Please attach it for my review.

Locate and attach the 2 very most recent ones.

on Windows Vista & Win7 & WIN8 / 8.1  the logs are in this folder:

You may have to set Windows Explorer to show all Folders ( even hidden folders) to see the container folder.

Press and hold Windows-key+E key on keyboard to start Windows Explorer  ( File Manager for Windows).
From the Windows Explorer menu options, Select Tools, then Folder Options.
Next click the View tab.
Locate and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
Locate and click "Show hidden files and folders and drives. "
Click Apply > OK.
