Ransom Trojan, photos and e-mails scrambled, now new problems...

Hello:

On 10-27 I was hit by an apparent Ransom! attack.  I noticed that all of my photos (roughly 50,000 of them) began to become inaccessible.  Then the same started with my e-mail.

This is the "ransom note" that it deposited in the vast majority of my files:

What happened to your files ?
All of your files were protected by a strong encryption with RSA-2048 using CryptoWall 2.0.
More information about the encryption keys using RSA-2048 can be found here: http://en.wikipedia....A_(cryptosystem)

What does this mean ?
This means that the structure and data within your files have been irrevocably changed, you will not be able to work with them, read them or see them,
it is the same thing as losing them forever, but with our help, you can restore them.

How did this happen ?
Especially for you, on our server was generated the secret key pair RSA-2048 - public and private.
All your files were encrypted with the public key, which has been transferred to your computer via the Internet.
Decrypting of your files is only possible with the help of the private key and decrypt program, which is on our secret server.

What do I do ?
Alas, if you do not take the necessary measures for the specified time then the conditions for obtaining the private key will be changed.
If you really value your data, then we suggest you do not waste valuable time searching for other solutions because they do not exist.

I ran McAfee and it found a Ransom Trojan and removed it.  This stopped that problem.

Any new photos I loaded afterward stayed unaffected and any new e-mails were fine.  (I have lost all the ones previous to 10-27).  However, I was running very slow and my HD fan was working overtime, my cursor keeps going into the "busy" circle,  and my desktop icons keep flickering as though my computer is busy doing something.

I opened up the task manager and found nearly two dozen running processes called ahyblntw.exe which is probably just a nonsense random file name.  It lists it as being associated with Google Chrome but again, I doubt this.  I don't even have Chrome open, and when I do open it, I see completely different (legitimate) processes listed differently.  When I try to close them with task manager (end task) it simply keeps opening more, faster than I can close them.

I followed the path to this ahyblntw.exe file and this is it:  computer> app data> LocalLow> Temp> Eyxszmscb> fsynmze    (I assume this aren't real file folders?)

I then ran Spybot S &D and it found nothing.  I downloaded and ran the trial premium version of Malwarebytes and it found several (mostly benign) Trojans and some PUPs which were cleaned.  The problem persisted so I then ran Malwarebytes with the rootkit scan enabled.  Nothing.

This is still going on and the computer is nearly unusable.  THANK GOODNESS I have Carbonite offsite storage or else 50K+ irreplaceable photos and 7K+ e-mails would be lost forever as I certainly don't plan on paying the ransom.  But before I redownload all my stuff from Carbonite, I want to get my computer squeaky clean.

I ran the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and have attached to two scan logs.

I'd appreciate any help GREATLY!

Thanks

    Run FRST.exe/FRST64.exe and click Fix only once and wait

    The tool will create a log (Fixlog.txt) in the folder, please post it to your reply.

    =========================================

    Make sure you have created that system restore point before you continue!

    Please read the directions carefully so you don't end up deleting something that is good!!

    If in doubt about an entry....please ask or choose Skip!!!!

    Don't Delete anything unless instructed to!

    You can attach the logs if they're too long:

    Bottom right corner of this page.

    reply1.jpg

    New window that comes up.

    replyer1.jpg

    Then...........

    Please download and run ComboFix.

    The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

    Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/dl/12/ <---ComboFix direct download

    Please make sure you click download buttons that look similar to this, not "sponsored ad links":

    bleep-crop.jpg

    Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

    Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

    Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

    Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

    ---------->NOTE<----------

    If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

    Last:

    Clean out temp files:

    Download TFC from here and save it to your desktop.

    http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tfc/dl/92/

    Close any open programs and Internet browsers.

    Double click TFC.exe to run it on XP (for Vista and Windows 7 right click and choose "Run as administrator") and once it opens click on the Start button on the lower left of the program to allow it to begin cleaning.

    Please be patient as clearing out temp files may take a while.

    Once it completes you may be prompted to restart your computer, please do so.

    Once it's finished you may delete TFC.exe from your desktop or save it for later use for the cleaning of temporary files.

Mr.C:

I have finished the TDSS scan.  All it found was one suspicious file (a RealPlayer downloader), and no Malicious objects.

I am a little unclear as to where I find the report you need me to attach.  i.e. this:

  • A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here. There may be 3 logs > so post or attach all of them.
  • Sometimes these logs can be very large, in that case please attach it or zip it up and attach it.

Where is my "root directory" and how do I find the 3 logs you need?

I am at the last step.  Before I reply with the reports you need, I #1 need an answer to my above post and #2 when I was finished with the Combofix scan and the computer automatically rebooted, my Mcaffe antivirus again became active (I had disabled it for the scan as directed).  Now when I go to download the TFC.exe to clean temp files, Mcaffe is saying that this exe "contains viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted programs that can damage your computer....blah blah.

Not sure what to do here.

PLEASE SEE ABOVE TWO POSTS AS WELL.

Well, now I see that even when I tried to download TFC.exe from another site (geeks to go) I got the exact same result with Mcafee.  I then tried again to download Delfix and AGAIN, got the Mcafee virus warning.  It DID allow me to download Rogue Killer without any problem.  Maybe it is only allowing me to do the direct downloads (the ones you supply the links to) and just doesn't like when I try to download from another site?

In any event I did not download TFC yet since I wanted your advice first.

Where is my "root directory" and how do I find the 3 logs you need?

it "C:\"   Double click My Computer > Double click on your hard drive C:\

If TDSSKiller didn't find anything, then I don't need to see the logs

===============================

Now when I go to download the TFC.exe to clean temp files, Mcaffe is saying that this exe "contains viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted programs that can damage your computer....blah blah.

Not sure what to do here.

Disable McAffe and try or I zipped it up and attached it.

Let me know.....MrC

OK, TFC run and rebooted.  Attached are the reports you requested.  There were only 2 log reports for TDSS Killer in the C:\

The pesky running processes are now killed and things seem to be normal so far.

My Mcaffe just lit up and said that it found an Artemis Trojan in the Combofix.exe that I saved to my desktop.  Is this normal?

What's next?

Are any of your files, documents or photos encrypted????

==============================

Please delete this folder:
C:\Users\Ed\AppData\Roaming\???? <---it's going to have odd sysmbols in it. It shouldn't be hard to spot.

You may have to enable hidden files to see it:

Yes, pretty much everything is encrypted.  Almost all my photos, videos, word documents, e-mails.

I have everything backed up on Carbonite offsite storage and will download it all eventually.

When I look inside the folder:  C:\Users\Ed\AppData\Roaming  there are MANY other FOLDERS all of which appear to be normal folders.  There are three FILES inside this folder with gibberish names.

GDIPFONTCASHEV1.Dat

wklnhst.dat

and one file that looks like Chinese letters.  It is a FILE though, not a FOLDER

OK, I forgot you mentioned that in your first post.

Good that you have it all backed up.

======================

Delete all of these:

GDIPFONTCASHEV1.Dat

wklnhst.dat

and one file that looks like Chinese letters. It is a FILE though, not a FOLDER

==========================================

Please download AdwCleaner from HERE or HERE to your desktop.

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.

    Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator

  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • When it's done you'll see: Pending: Please uncheck elements you don't want removed.
  • Now click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • Look over the log especially under Files/Folders for any program you want to save.
  • If there's a program you may want to save, just uncheck it from AdwCleaner.
  • If you're not sure, post the log for review. (all items found are either adware/spyware/foistware)
  • If you're ready to clean it all up.....click the Clean button.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[s0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
  • Items that are deleted are moved to the Quarantine Folder: C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine
  • To restore an item that has been deleted:
  • Go to Tools > Quarantine Manager > check what you want restored > now click on Restore.
Next..................

thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
Next.........

Please Update and run a Threat Scan (Malwarebytes)

Click on settings > Detection and Protection > Non-Malware Protection > PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) detections > Make sure it's set to Treat detections as malware

Same for PUM (Potentially Unwanted Modifications)

Quarantine All that's found

OK, if there's no other problems.......

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • If you get Unsupported operating system. Aborting now, just reboot and try again.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt.
  • Please Post the contents of that document.
  • If you can't post it, attach it

I have attached the  checkup.txt report.

Question, I didn't realize my HD was so fragmented (31% apparently)  it says to defrag but not if it's "SSD"  What does that mean exactly?  Should I go ahead and do a defrag?

Also,  I read the article about the Cryptolocker that I had.   I  would like to try to use the Cryptoprevent software mentioned.  As the article states, the problem I have is most likely NOT the original "cryptolocker" virus since that one was shut down in June?  Is this correct?  If that is the case, will Cryptoprevent work on the newer types of encryption bugs out there?

Thanks,

SSD = Solid State Drive
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive

------------------------------------

This is the new virus and the software to prevent will work and I attached it. Make sure you check for updates often.

-----------------------------------

Out dated programs on the system are vulnerable to malware.
Please update or uninstall them:

===========================

Please uninstall this and any other Java listed in your Programs and Features:
Java 7 Update 67

Then: <-------Download and install the latest version (Java™ 8 Update 25) from Here. Uncheck the box to install the Ask toolbar!!!, McAfee Security Scan Plus or any other free "stuff".

=========================

Adobe Reader 9
Adobe Reader XI <---------you're showing 2 versions of Adobe Reader, make sure you only have one version installed or
download and install Foxit Reader which is less vulnerable to malware and much better than Adobe. Don't install any toolbars that may come with it (ASK Toolbar).

=========================

A little clean up to do....

Please Uninstall ComboFix: (------->if you used it<-------)

Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"

Copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

cf2.jpg

Then hit enter. (it may look like CF is re-installing but it's not)
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point

(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall or download and run the uninstaller)

---------------------------------

bwebb7v.jpgDownload Delfix from here and save it to your desktop. (you may already have this)

  • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is checked.
  • Click the Run button.
  • Reboot

Any other programs or logs that are still remaining, you can manually delete. (right click.....Delete)
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST folder, FRST-OlderVersion folder, MBAR folder, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.

Note:
If you used FRST and can't delete the quarantine folder:
Download the fixlist.txt to the same folder as FRST.exe.
Run FRST.exe and click Fix only once and wait
That will delete the quarantine folder created by FRST.
The rest you can manually delete.
