Mystery Problem

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine has a PC with a problem so I took a look at it. I have 20 years experience working on PCs.

The symptoms are repeated "virus detected messages". I believe the messages are coming from a program called "Spyware Protect 2009". She also gets the message "Generic Host Proccess has encountered error and cannot continue" message when she first boots.

I downloaded the Malwarebytes software and installed it. It does not run.

I tried thethe three ideas listed in another post

# Total-Security (FakeAlert)

# av360 (Fakealert)

# CLB Rootkit driver=TDSS/Seneka/GAOPDX/UAC/ovfst

I downloaded Hijackthis and ran it. I submitted the log to www.hijackthis.de. It listed about 10 items to remove. I checked them off in Hijackthis and checked the Fix Items button. When I restarted the PC, it booted to the wallpaper, but had no explorer running. To reboot, I had to poweroff. Upon rebooting, the Spyware Protect 2009 is still resident and she still gets the message "Generic Host Proccess has encountered error and cannot continue" message.

Luckily I saved the last log. Could some one point me in the right direction? Thanks

Hi,

I notice from your log that there's more than 1 Antivirus installed. AVG (outdated version) and Bitdefender

Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!

The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.

Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

So you have to make a decision here and keep the Antivirus you prefer and uninstall the other one.

Then reboot after uninstalling.

Also, I see you are running Teatimer.

I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.

When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.

If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.

Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.
