Malware Problem Undetected by Malware Bytes

Hello MalwareBytes Forums,

Yesterday I got home from eating dinner with my wife and booted up my Windows 8.1 computer.  Much to my dismay there was something terribly wrong and I got a ton of errors consisting of information similar to "Bad Image Error C://Windows/System32/(etcetcetc) is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error..." and some of my most used programs (Chrome, Music Bee, the Startup Menu) either would not load entirely or could only load in bits and pieces.  I had Windows Defender running and I did I a scan and found nothing wrong.  I downloaded MalwareBytes and did a scan and while some malware was detected the problem persisted after I quarentined them.

I tried to run a sfc /scannow on my system32 but it consistently gets to 23% done and tells me it cannot continue.

I downloaded Farbar Recovery Tool and scanned with it, I will attach the results below.  I did have utorrent on my computer prior to this, I tried to uninstall the program but it does not appear on my program list and when I try to run it via the search bar I get the error "cannot find this app".  I am sorry if this program is present in any of the data, it is certainly not running anything on my computer right now, but I cannot find a way to uninstall something that isn't there.

Thank you in advance,

Snes

I tried to run Malwarebytes but even though it showed up in my notifications bar I could not get it to run.  I also tried to run chameleon as a catalyst(which worked before) and that continually ran into errors as well, though I did not try every chameleon available(I'm in Asia so my time zone is kinda off from you guys I think).  Any ways you think I should try to get the program to run (currently when I try to run it it acts as many of my other programs and looks like it will run but then gets stopped along the way)?

Attached below are the results of the rogue killer scan.  I have tried to create a new system restore point but system restore seems to be down, (Lenovo OneKey).  Most of my important files are already backed up on my wife's computer but later today I'll back the rest of the important stuff up on a flash drive that I'll borrow from a friend(I just currently don't have an External Hard Drive or flash drive, as I'm in Asia)

Thank you for your help,

Snes

So I ran all of your instructions, attached below are the findings.  When I create a new folder I run into all kinds of problems, I do not know why.  Malwarebytes scan found nothing wrong.  I have uninstalled BrowserGuard.  I did not do a clean uninstall/install of Malwarebytes because it started working again, let me know if this is a problem.

Thanks a bundle,

Snes

Most to all of my problems still persist.  Chrome, Music Bee, Start Menu, and some folders aren't working.  Either the error "This App Can't run on your PC" appears (chrome) or "The drive or network that shortcut "startmenu" refers to is unavailable.  I'm currently reinstalling Chrome to see if that helps.  Upon the worse errors, a folder on my desktop will not open as it has been "corrupted and unreadable."  Chrome just got reinstalled and no images are loading in the program (every webpage looks is just text), BUT I just realized that I didn't uninstall it first, so that could be the problem?

Overall the system is functioning fine, but misc. programs are not responding correctly.  Was I supposed to hit "delete" on that last RogueKiller scan, you didn't say to so I didn't.

I don't think your problems are malware related but..........

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner (it may take a while to run)

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

First please Disable any Antivirus you have active, as shown in This Topic

Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the scan.

http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.

Click Start

When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install

Click Start

Make sure that the options Remove found threats is unchecked and the option Scan unsafe applications is checked

Click Advanced settings and select the following:

ceba8c51-8f88-44b9-ad41-5f07ba8351b1.png

Click Start

Wait for the scan to finish

If threats were found:

Click on "list of threats found"

Click on "export to text file" and save it as ESET SCAN and save to the desktop

Click on back

Put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"

Click on finish

Post back the log.....MrC

That scan gets continually stopped in the early phases (after the terms and agreements).  I think you're right, my problem isn't malware related, but rather something happened on my hard drive that corrupted a ton of files.  I thought it was malware because similar errors were fixed by malware detection like RougeFix when I looked them up online.  It makes sense that my most used applications (and thus the ones that were probably open when/if my computer crashed) are the only ones affected.

Any ideas on how to fix this?  sfc /scannow, and trying to to maintenance repairs did not work, generally getting stopped at some percentage mark and then getting stuck.

I ran it and it crashed/froze my computer multiple times (reaching the 10% mark then just sitting there for hours).  Yesterday (prior to the chkdsk run) the sound stopped working entirely (not a hardware related problem) despite no problems before.  I ran a registry cleaner and now Google Chrome is working just fine, but still having a ton of other problems.  I've tried sfc /scannow and dism but they continually come back with errors.

I mean kind of.  MusicBee and the StartMenu still do not work, I tried to run a video game today and got a Bad Image Error(I believe it was Games for Windows Live related).  I don't think the problems are malware related but I don't really know what I can do.  Something is corrupted deep down in the computer and I think maybe the only solution is a refresh?
