malicious website protection disabled

Recommended Posts

At the time this incident occurred Emsisoft Anti Malware was at the tale end of its scan.

A little window popped up advising me that all protection was not enabled. Why -- I have no idea. I right clicked the taskbar icon and checked Malicious Website Protection, then opened the dashboard and clicked "Fix Now" -- then opened up the protection settings and clicked in the little circle to enable this item -- then restarted and it still shows Malicious Website Protection disabled.

Just a moment ago I noticed something to do with MBAM in my taskbar so I opened it and it said the MBAM Anti-Malware database was missing or corrupt and asked if I wanted to download a new copy and I clicked YES. But nothing happened that was apparent.

Right now I am running a threat scan with MBAM.

Right now both the taskbar icon and protection module in the program shows MWP enabled, but dashboard says it is not. Does anyone know what is going on here?

Hello and welcome, back:

It sounds as if perhaps MBAM & EAM may have bumped into one another, and/or that something blocked an MBAM database update?

If rebooting the computer doesn't fix things, here are a couple of things to try:

  • Please carefully follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  • If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and post back attached to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)
  • NOTE: There is an FAQ section with valuable information located here - Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions

Alternatively, you may wish to try the new public Release Candidate build of 2.0.3. It does fix many different issues for some users.
Information and download link are here: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0.3 Release Candidate 1
Known issues are here: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0.3 RC 1 - Known Issues

If you do, it might be a good idea to cleanly upgrade, following the basic sequence here: MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x (you would substitute the version 2.0.3 RC1 installer instead of the 2.0.2 installer at the appropriate step).
And if the clean upgrade doesn't resolve your issue, it would greatly help us to see the diagnostic logs requested above, in step #2.

Thanks,

I had the same thing just happen, but it had nothing to do with some other software scanning.

Coincidence? Could be, but I think it was a bad update. I could not enable malicious website protection. Rebooted, still could not enable it. Came here, saw someone else just had the same issue. Updated databases, and suddenly, malicious website protection can start once again.

Hi, @hapless:

Thanks for reporting your experience. Glad it is resolved for you. :)

In fact, however, problems that sound "the same" most often are not.

Each computer is unique.

(Had there been a "bad update", I suspect there likely would have been many, many more of the millions of users reporting the problem at the same time. ;) )

If your problem recurs, it would be less confusing for everyone if you would please start your own, new, separate topic.

That way, we can assist both you and the OP with individual help.

@Nikilet:

Please post back when you are ready and let us know how things are for you, after following the suggestions made earlier.

Thank you,

I wasn't able to be on my computer and when I finally came back to it last evening, MBAM was back to normal. I have no idea why.

Hah, I know why.

I'm sure it happened to others, but it's not like everyone will notice during the short timeframe this happened in, or come here to post even if they do notice.

To hapless:

I see you are a new member. You aren't starting off on a very good foot by posting sarcasm. If you don't notice that a security program isn't performing correctly, right away, then my advice would be to start paying closer attention. I pay very close attention to matters like this, all the time, every day. If you don't have something to say that will help, then it probably would be best to just keep the sarcasm to yourself.

Same problem here.  Got a prompt for a NEW SOFTWARE update yesterday and and installed it.  Woke up this morning and found a red mark on my system tray icon and a message that Malicious Website Protection was disabled.  I manually enabled it in config, rebooted but it was still "red".  Did a few more "enables" and reboots and same problem continued.  After taking a couple (I assume) manual database updates and rebooting for the umpteenth time it now seems to be OK.  Seems the last SOFTWARE update broke something.

Also, after that update I was unable to delete the desktop icon no matter how I tried setting the permissions.  After a bit of Googling I found that disabling the "self protection mode" I was able to delete the icon.  Now THAT seems like a bit of overkill.

Sorry, unable to edit my own last message ... just to add to the above:  Win 8.1 Pro 64bit is the OS.

I have MBAM running on three computers. Two I run regularly and on waht appears to be the most recent update, the malicious website protection has been disabled. I booted another compter and it was fine, until MBAM was updated to the latest version. Now it is having the same problem. On one computer I unistalled and reinstalled but that didn't help any. Now I can't even run a scan.  What is going on?  Two computes have Winwdows 7 PRO, the other has Windows 8.1.

This happened to me just now...got the warnings that "malicious website protection" has been turned off, and won't turn back on, reboot didn't help.  Something similar happened a few months ago where I couldn't even open Malwarebytes, and did the uninstall/reinstall which fixed the problem.

My question is...I have the "Pro" version, and when I uninstall/reinstall using my key code, does this deduct from the number of computers I can use that key code for...or is my computer recognized?  If I remember right, I can use the key code for 4 or 5 comuters, or is it 4 or 5 times?  Just wondering before I go ahead and uninstall the program and find I can't reinstall due to being at the limit.

Cheers.

Same problem for me. Updated last night. When I booted up a few minutes ago got the "Malicious Website Protection disabled, Malware Protection enabled. I have the Pro version. Tried suggestions in pinned topic but no help. I'm going to try the full uninstall then reinstall and see what happens.

I agree it's a problem with the latest update.

If there is anything I can provide to help debug this, pleaase let me know.

I had the same problem.  The icon showed there was a problem so I opened the main dashboard screen.  It said that Malicious Website Protection was disabled but Malware Protection was enabled.  I was able to check the box for Malicious Website Protection, but there was no difference.

I followed the advice in the pinned topic by updating and re-starting MBAM - no luck.  Re-booted computer - no luck.  Clicked the download link to download MBAM - success!

Back to normal for now.

Guess I will have to do the clean removal process too, on both my computers I imagine. I thought all was well but got the same pop ups and warnings again last night. I updated, scanned, restarted and all was well again ... until this morning when the same thing happened AGAIN! It has to be related to an update.

I followed the MBAM Clean Removal Process 2X and after the reinstall all is well, everything is working again.

This has to be related to the latest update. I wish I had collected the logs before I did the clean removal.

I have two Pro/Premium copies of MBAM, one on my Desktop and the other on my Laptop.  The Update, then Stop and Restart instructions worked on my Laptop in fixing this problem, but following the same steps did not fix it on my Desktop.  I had to use MBAM Clean Removal Process to get MBAM running correctly on my Desktop.  Both of my machines are running the same WIN 7 64 bits OS.  If the easy fix doesn't work, go use the heavy handed solution with the clean removal.

The clean removal is not needed. There are 2 main fixes that will resolve this for you.

Malicious Website Protection disabled

1. Simply download the program installer and install over the top of your current version. (I would still suggest restarting the computer)

2. For those more technically inclined you can delete the rules.ref file and then start MBAM again and check for updates and it should fix it too.

C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\rules.ref

Have had ALL the same indications and attempts to fix, etc, as everyone else has. All to no avail.

Then suddenly with it in an error condition, ("Malicious Website Protection disabled") when I started

a scan, the attempt failed with an error message -"MalwareBytes database missing or corrupt. Would

you like to download a new copy." Y/U  I picked Yes. It did load a new copy, and after doing

a scan, it found nothing. Still showed as being in the error condition

After stopping the mbam service and tasks in Task Manager, and then starting mbam again, all is well.

(2) Windows 7 and (1) Windows 8

Hope this helps.

Thanks GSparks33 - the pinned topic asks to reinstall the program as the last section. That fix will 100% fix the issue as long as your computer was working before and is not disabled due to an infection or other software conflict.

Thank you again and glad you now have it working again.

I just had this problem with Malicious Website Protection turning it self off. I rebooted, downloaded latest update and ran a scan. When the scan was done the website protection turned back on.

After reading your comment, I tried the same thing...at first I got an error message a few seconds after starting a scan, but ran anther update and it scanned normally after that.  When the scan was complete, I clicked on the "Fix" button, which previously did nothing, and that worked this time.  So far, so good.

I did the steps found in Malicious Website Protection disabled. That didn't work.

Then I did AdvancedSetup's #2 posted earlier about removing the rules.ref, then performed the above steps again. So far it's working, but it did that before too and then reverted back to the error, so will have to see if things are still functioning right later.
