Chameleon doesn't work

Recommended Posts

I think I have malware, as Malwarebytes does not open. I have uninstalled it and used chameleon, but I got the same result (it closes about a second after it starts scanning or updating).

I downloaded the farbar recovery scan tool which was recommended here: https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/9573-im-infected-what-do-i-do-now/

but I use TrendMicro Anti-virus, and it deleted it, saying it has contained a virus. I am trying to figure out what to do next.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Dave

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:

Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.

Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time.

Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.

Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.

Stay with me to the end, the absence of symptoms doesn't mean that your machine is fully operational.

Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.

Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.

If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

:excl: I can't foresee everything, so if anything unexpected happens, please stop and inform me!

:excl: There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!

THE

Okay, I downloaded FSRT and ran it. It created the log (which I've attached) but it froze up, and I restarted it and re ran it when it suddenly stopped working. I've attached the second log it as well, and renamed it "Fixlog2.txt".

I then uninstalled Malwarebytes and reinstalled it. I opened and tried to update it, but it stopped working a second after I clicked "Update", so no log.

I hope this gives you some useful info. Thanks for any help you can offer.

1: Download netconf replacement tool from the link below

https://malwarebytes...m1plzyl4m73l75o

2: Unzip the zip file to Extract the "Net Conf Fix" folder on your desktop.

3: Once extracted, open the Net Conf Fix folder.

4: Double click on the net-replacement.bat file. If you are using Windows Vista or higher, please **right-click** the net-replacement.bat file and click Run as Administrator from the menu.

5: After the tool has run, please do a Logoff >> Shutdown >> Restart for a new Windows session.

Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and click Update Now

We no longer require FRST, so you can enable Trend Micro.

Okay, we're making progress. The Net Conf Fix seemed to work. I was able to open and update Malwarebytes. I ran the scan with only the "Scan for rottkits" checked. It found 6 items which were quarantined, and I applied that action. I've attached the log titled "History Log".

Should I run a full scan?

Thanks for your continued help. I await your next directions.

My only other concern is stopping malware before it gets too far. What is the best way to keep the malware from getting on my machine, and how often should I check for it? My virus protection does an automatic scan every night. What should I do for Malware?

And how do I get past the fact that my Trend Micro Virus protection conflicts with Malwarebytes?

I'll give you some readings and software to harden your security?

And how do I get past the fact that my Trend Micro Virus protection conflicts with Malwarebytes?

How do you mean?

I will clarify...

My Anti-virus software (TrendMicro) blocks viruses as they try to enter my system. It doesn't protect against malware, so I would like to have supplemental software that blocks malware as it tries to get into my system.

Trend Micro used (a couple years ago) to not function properly when Malwarebytes was installed, so I couldn't have both running on my system at the same time. Trend Micro just deleted FRST as a virus, and running FRST deleted TrendMicro. I don't know if that is still a problem with Malwarebytes, but it would be nice to have the two programs working concurrently.

If it can't, then should I manually run Malwarebytes each evening? Once a week?

I would like to prevent my machine from getting infected, as it seems that would be easier than cleaning it once it is infected. That's really the advice I'm looking for. If you have any suggestions, I'd like to hear them.

Thanks

Dave
