Lasaoren removal help

cb14

Recommended Posts

I previously posted about problems with lasaoren infection and I reported that i was finally able to get rid off it with JRT. Unfortunately the cleaning was apparently not perfect, the Firefox start page still gets redirected, although i am not getting any ads any more at this point of time?

Any thoughts/help here?

For now I am using Opera as much as possible which seems not to be affected by the virus.

Thanks for the logs, entries you mention in RogueKiller are also picked up with FRST and are in the fix for removal... Continue please:

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into.

NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.

The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Next,

Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, from the Dashboard please Check for Updates by clicking the Update Now... link

When the update completes select > Settings > Detection and Protection > Enable Scan for rootkit and Under Non Malware Protection set both PUP and PUM to Treat detections as malware.

Click on the SCAN button and run a Threat Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware by clicking the Scan Now>> button.

When the scan is complete, if there have been detections, click Apply Actions to allow MBAM to clean what was detected.

In most cases, a restart will be required.

Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.

Once completed please click on the History > Application Logs and find your scan log and open it and then click on the "copy to clipboard" button and post back the results on your next reply.

Next,

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.

Double click on Adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan
Once the scan is done, click on the Clean button.
You will get a prompt asking to close all programs. Click OK.

A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
You can also find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[sn].txt. Where n in the scan reference number

Next,

thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts. (re-enable when done)
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.

Hi,

Firefox is not hijacked any more. :)

I hope I attached the appropriate files because I ran Adw several times before myself.

I did not attach the JRT, Malwarebytes and Microsoft malicious malware files because they were empty.

I would like to mention that in the beginning I tried to clean it myself and I also use Adw and JRT.  Adw seemed not to be able to do much on Lasaoren , while JRT largely crippled it, but was not able to get it out of Firefox.

We still need to run an online AV scan to ensure there are no remnants of any infection left on your system that may have been missed. This scan is very thorough and well worth running, it can take several hours please be patient and let it complete:

Run Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and Windows 7/8 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin.

(To run ESET Online Scanner in a browser other than Internet Explorer, you'll need to download ESET SMART  Installer during the process)

Go to Eset web page http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/ to run an online scan from ESET.

Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
click on the Run ESET Online Scanner button
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the add/on to be installed
Click Start
Make sure that the option "Remove found threats"  is UNticked
Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the following options are checked:

Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth Technology

Select "Change" next to Current scan targets A new window will open, select any extra drives, Flash drives etc as required.
Click Scan
wait for the virus definitions to be downloaded
Wait for the scan to finish

When the scan is complete

If no threats were found
put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"
close program
report to me that nothing was found

If threats were found

click on "list of threats found"
click on "export to text file" and save it as ESET SCAN and save to the desktop
Click on back
put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"
click on finish

close program

Copy and paste the report in next reply, also let me know if there are any remaining issues or concerns.....

Hi,

I performed the ESET scan as recommended.

Only, for some reason it did not save the file or in a place i cannot find. At least I copied the screen before.

There were 4 threats found which were deleted:

C:\Users\carl\Downloads\ccsetup413.exe Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Google.D potentially unsafe application
C:\Users\carl\Downloads\ccsetup414.exe Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Google.D potentially unsafe application
C:\Users\carl\Downloads\ccsetup416.exe Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Google.D potentially unsafe application
C:\Users\carl\Downloads\Firefox_Setup.exe a variant of Win32/InstallCore.OZ potentially unwanted application

Let me know what you think.Thanks.

Those entries quoted in the ESET log are installers possibly bundled with unwanted extras, if you use any of those do not use the default setting, choose "advanced" or similar if offered and be sure to untick unwanted extras...

Next,

Adobe Reader appears to be outdated...

Visit http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/otherversions/ and download the latest version of Acrobat Reader

Step 1 - Select your Operating System.

Step 2 - Select your Langauge.

Step 3 - Select latest version.

Untick the option for any security scanner or toolbar if offered.

Download and install.

Having the latest updates ensures there are no security vulnerabilities in your system.

Next,

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

    Activate UAC
    Remove disinfection tools
    Create registry backup
    Purge System Restore
    Reset system settings

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Part of the routine will be to create a registry back up with ERUNT,  the back up will be created here:

C:\Windows\ERUNT

When all is known to be well with your system you can delete that back up folder if you consider it as not needed...

Any remnant files or logs from the tools used can be deleted...

Next,

Read the following link to fully understand PC security and best practices, you may find it useful....

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/407147/answers-to-common-security-questions-best-practices/#entry2316629

Let me know if there are any remaining issues or concerns, if non are we ok to close out....

Thank you,

Kevin...

I seemed to have the newest version of Adobe already installed.

Delfix did not remove Hitman pro free version, which I installed as a part of my own previous cleaning efforts.

Should I uninstall it?

Generally, is there a reason to uninstall  cleaning software other than saving space?

Further, while registry cleaners are generally deemed dangerous, the CC registry cleaner is considered mellow. Is it something you would recommend to run from time to time or rather leave it alone?

Opera browser did not get infected this time. Do you consider it safer or it is just coincidence.?

I am relatively cautions with downloading fre software( mistakes happen) , but this is now for the second time in 6 months having a major issue. I run windows security essentials(Vista), malware bytes ( free version) and McAffee ( not real time) scan upon start up which came from the ISP. Is there anything I should change here?.

Thank you.

Thanks for the update, I thought Adobe was an old version from intial scan with FRST, my mistake.....

Delfix does not remove Hitman Pro, that program is fully installed. If you do not want to keep it uninstall  via Programs and Features....

The tools we use are removed when we finish up, these tools are quite unforgiving and can cause severe damage to your system if not used by a specifically trained user. If you feel confident to use the tools just keep them, its your choice...

CCleaner is ok to use as a general file cleaner, I would not recommend or use the registry component, there is nothing to gain and it  can cause issues for your system....

The following was originally posted by Animal, Site Administrator at Bleeping Computers.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:

Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.

Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.

Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.

The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in unpredictable results.

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

I``ve never used or installed Opera so have no recommendations either way with that Browser....

Free software usually will come bundled unwanted extras, if the default option is used during the installation those unwanted extras will also be installed. There maybe an advanced option, when chosen you maybe given the option to untick any addons, always use that option...

A good program to do the "unticking" for you is UnChecky, this is free to d/l and use, has no unwanted extras and is recommended by many..

Available here: http://unchecky.com/ have a read at the link before you decide to install the program...

I gave a link in my previous reply regarding system security, all you need to know about security is contained in that link.... The sytem you are running seems ok, the only change I would recommend is to upgrade Malwarebytes to the Premium version. I do not work for MB so have nothing to gain making that recommendation....

Let me know when we are ok to close out....

regards,

Kevin....

Thank you very much. I will probably upgrade malware bytes to the paid version in the very near future (some financial issues now).

Opera is a simple, lightning fast browser( does not work with all web sites, only explorer does ), was not affected by the current infection and my hypothesis was that since only relatively few people use it it might not be as much of a target for malware.

Thanks again for all your help. We can close the topic now.
