Should I have both Norton and malwarebytes or just Norton?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting norton via comcast, i was chatting with a few of their representatives and they all told me it is recommended to only have norton security suite. ive read on here and on Norton forum that some or alot of people have both norton and malwarebytes anti malware, i trust you guys but i think i also trust comcast, im soo confused lol :(. Having 2 antivirus programs may/can cause a problem/conflict?. i copied and pasted what a comcast guy told me:

Kamran: Our goal is to provide you with a consistently superior customer experience - that's our guarantee. Learn more about the Comcast Customer Guarantee athttp://www.comcast.com/corporate/Customers/CustomerGuarantee.html?fss=customer%20guarantee

Kamran: As I understand you need to know that can you keep two anti-viruses at the same time. Is that correct?

Kamran: Ramiro, I would suggest to have only on at a time as some times it contradicts with each other and hampers the speed of the system

Kamran: if you want to use than you can, but it is highly recommended to use one anti-virus at one time.

Kamran: Thank you for providing that information.

Kamran: Thank you for providing that information.

Kamran: Ramiro, I just recommending the use of only one at a time.

Kamran: If you need to use both you can.

Kamran: There is no such criteria that you can not use any other with norton

Kamran: It is just recommended to use one, and the norton provided by Comcast is full version.

Kamran: Which protects your system from any type of virus attack.

Kamran: They just use an extra precaution to protect the system.

Kamran: If you want you also can use it.

Kamran: I am saying the people who are using are may be using it for extra precaution.

Kamran: The norton provided by the Comcast is fully loaded and complete version to protect your system from any kind of virus attack.

Kamran: Norton provided by the Comcast is full version and capable enough to secure the system from any type of virus attack.

Kamran: Comcast recommend the use of Norton only.

Kamran: Comcast provide the full version of Norton is to protect the systems of the customers. It recommend the use of it

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) is not an anti virus application.  It is a non-viral anti malware application and is a complimentary, adjunct, application to a fully installed anti virus application such as the offerings from Symantec such as their retail Norton AV products.

Using MBAM in conjunction with a fully installed anti virus solution gives a broader protection spectrum than either would provide individually.

There is a sticky (somewhere) that gives information on settings to help make sure MBAM coexists with various anti virus applications should a problem arise.  I don't have the URL ATM but we can did it up you'd like.

^^^All true, of course.^^^

Having said all that, some of the ISP-branded versions of the major AVs are stripped-down versions that do not offer all of the usual, retail features.
So, it's not always possible to "add exclusions" in some ISP-branded AV products.
I don't know if that is the case with the Norton/Symantec product that Comcast is offering you.

As far as mutual exclusions, the attached screen shot shows an example (with a different AV) of how to exclude an AV in MBAM.
And the MBAM files to exclude in Norton are listed below.

In any event, if you need help with that, please feel free to post back and someone will assist you.

As just another home user unaffiliated with the Malwarebytes company, I would not run any of my computers without MBAM Premium along with the AV.

Thanks,

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software for your version of Windows:

For 32 bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 & Windows 8:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7 & 8:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware \mbamscheduler.exe

Note: If you are using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall, you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE and MBAMSERVICE.EXE from it as well.

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

is norton better than microsoft security essentials

i have a lenovo laptop pc idea pad yoga 11s, dont know if that matters,a full battery will last about 4 hours before i have to charge it, should i always have it charging or only charge it when the battery is low, i prefer to have it plugged in so i dont have to keep plugging it and unplugging it but i dont know whats the right/safe/correct thing to do

YOU are your best defense.  Don't just act or react...  THINK.

Notebooks are designed with hardware to charge a notebook's battery.  They won't "over charge".

Keep your notebook plugged-in and running off the AC adapter at all times.  If and when you need to go mobile, then you can remove the AC adapter.
