Suspect some Malware on my PC.

Running Windows 7 H.P. 64bit, with SP1. Experience level, I'm computer literate, but not advanced.

I noticed this particular issue about 8 days ago, give or take a day. The only new software on my machine in that time period (other than a wIndows update which completed successfully from what I could tell) is for my new wireless Epson printer, and GoPro Studio for my new camera. Both installed in the aforementioned time frame.

I first noticed when using my Logitech wireless mouse it would deactivate the active window when I click "No" to delete some duplicate music files. I thought the mouse was acting up, but no, changed batteries to known fresh set. I've tried several mice in the house, wireless and USB, and all do the same thing. Then my Registry cleaner window  (UniBlue's "Registry Booster" -have used it for several years now) ceased to appear at bootup. I looked in Task Manager and under the Processes tab I see it running??? I ended the process, clicked on the desktop shortcut for the program and then it starts normally.

I looked at other processes while there and noticed several not having anything in the description field. Conhost.exe was the first one so I googled it and read some of the issues people were having with it and that led me here. I have had Malwarebytes on this PC before but it went missing and I don't remember deleting it, but not entirely certain of that. At any rate I reinstalled it last Saturday and it found a 5-6 PUP's, one of which oddly enough was from Epson. I quarantined them all.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated! I'm quite leary of using my PC for anything much that requires a password (other than this forum).

Ged,

PS: I have RogueKiller64 (via a CNet link) installed as of an hour ago, and I let it update.

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.
  • Stay with me to the end, the absence of symptoms doesn't mean that your machine is fully operational.
  • Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

:excl: I can't foresee everything, so if anything unexpected happens, please stop and inform me!
:excl: There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!

  warning.gif Rules and policies

We won't support any piracy.
That being told, if any evidence of illegal OS, software, cracks/keygens or any other will be revealed, any further assistance will be suspended. If you are aware that there is this kind of stuff on your machine, remove it before proceeding!
The same applies to any use of P2P software: uTorrent, BitTorrent, Vuze, Kazaa, Ares... We don't provide any help for P2P, except for their removal. All P2P software has to be uninstalled or at least fully disabled before proceeding!

Failure to follow these guidelines will result with closing your topic and withdrawning any assistance.

:excl: Here is my thought on registry cleaners, based on years of experience and based on thoughts of many Windows experts:

  • Registry cleaners offer no perceptible increase in performance.
  • Registry cleaners can break things.
  • Even if registry cleaners don’t break anything, using one wastes your valuable time and (perhaps) money.

Please read some of the links below for better understanding:

Let's see what is going on with your system:

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

TwinHeadedEagle,

Thanks so much for your reply, I have the done as you have asked and the requested files are attached. Two things I forgot to mention yesterday, so if not apparent in the two files, I'll fill in the blanks now. The PC is just over a year old, home built from various NEW components, and until this I've experienced no problems. It has three HD's. The operating system is on a 128G solid state drive, programs/games etc I try to keep on the second drive, both drives were new when installed. The third is for media files, docs and such and came from my previous PC. It was reformatted once the operating system was installed. I do use a number of thumb drives... only shared with this PC and my work PC, which is on a rather robust University network.

  • Right-click on FRST.gif icon and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.

Ok thanks again sir!

I am happy to hear there are no infections! :D

I have run the scans and created the txt files per your instructions and have attached all results as requested. In case it is relevant, I noticed during all the scans, when clicking "Yes" or "OK" etc, to proceed to the next screen, I still have the issue with the cursor deslecting active window when clicking those options. Again I used several of my mice this morning and all create the same issue.

I have also browsed the links provided regarding Registry Cleaners. I will not be renewing that subscription and am more than happy to put that amount into the "Donate" link instead, once given the all clear to log into websites again.

Thank You!
